OCEANOGRAPHY & NATURAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT, PART-TIME LECTURER POOL
The Department of Oceanography and Natural Sciences (OcNS) at Cal Poly (Solano Campus) invites applications for a pool of part-time lecturers from our local geographic area. Positions are available as determined by need during the Fall and/or Spring semesters of the 2026-27 academic year. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications, experience, and time base.
Responsibilities may include teaching undergraduate lecture and/or laboratory courses in:

• Chemistry: General Chemistry (I and II) and related foundational courses
• Physics: Algebra-based and calculus-based general physics sequences, including courses for engineers
• Oceanography: Introductory and upper-division courses across all subdisciplines, including physical, chemical, biological, and geological oceanography

Candidates with interdisciplinary expertise across these areas are especially encouraged to apply.
SALARY INFORMATION
Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. As of July 2024, the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:
Lecturer A: $5,507-$6,677
Lecturer B: $6,221-$13,224
Lecturer C: $6,825-$14,523
Lecturer D: $8,593-$15,211

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Master's degree in Oceanography, Chemistry, Physics, or a closely related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Doctoral degree in Oceanography, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate lecture and/or laboratory courses
• Expertise in one or more of the following areas:
  • General Chemistry sequences
  • Calculus-based Physics for engineers
  • Oceanography (physical, chemical, biological, or geological)

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Following a conditional offer of employment, a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work with Cal Poly. The Department of Oceanography and Natural Sciences (OcNS) is located at Cal Poly's Solano Campus in Vallejo, CA. The department brings together faculty with expertise in ocean science, chemistry, and physics to support interdisciplinary teaching and learning. OcNS administers the Bachelor of Science in Oceanography and provides foundational instruction in chemistry and physics for students across the university. Faculty are committed to excellence in undergraduate education and to Cal Poly's "Learn by Doing" philosophy, emphasizing hands-on, experiential learning in both laboratory and field settings.
