An Occupational Therapy Home Modification job involves assessing and adapting a person's living environment to enhance safety, accessibility, and independence. Occupational therapists evaluate a home for potential hazards and recommend modifications such as grab bars, ramps, or adaptive equipment. They work with clients, caregivers, and contractors to implement changes that support daily activities and reduce the risk of injury. This role is especially important for individuals with disabilities, aging adults, or those recovering from illness or injury.

What types of clients and settings do occupational therapy home modification specialists typically work with?

Occupational Therapy Home Modification specialists typically support individuals with physical, cognitive, or sensory challenges who wish to remain safely and independently in their own homes. They often work in collaboration with healthcare teams, contractors, and family members across private residences, community settings, and sometimes assisted living environments. Daily tasks may include conducting in-home assessments, recommending adaptive equipment, designing modification plans, and providing client education. This role offers the opportunity to make a direct and meaningful impact on clients' quality of life by addressing real barriers to daily living.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the occupational therapy home modification position, and why are they important?

Success in Occupational Therapy Home Modification requires a strong background in occupational therapy, expertise in environmental assessments, and knowledge of home modification techniques, generally supported by relevant licensure or certification. Familiarity with assistive technology, home assessment tools, and documentation software is essential. Outstanding interpersonal skills, creative problem-solving, and cultural sensitivity help professionals excel when working closely with clients and families. These abilities ensure that solutions are tailored, effective, and enhance the safety and independence of individuals in their homes.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in care conferences, QI initiatives, and program development to support strong clinical and operational outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Current, unrestricted COTA license in the state of practice (or eligibility prior to start).
  • NBCOT certification preferred; strong new grads with relevant LTC/acute rehab experience may be considered based on client need.
  • Prior experience in skilled nursing, post-acute rehab, or long-term care strongly preferred.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and collaboration skills; resident-centered, outcomes-focused approach.

  • Competitive pay
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Supplemental insurance options
