Job Summary: Distribution Design Engineering II - Houston, TX
About the Role
Join our team as a Distribution Design Engineer II, where you'll independently manage complex electric distribution system designs for overhead and underground projects. Play a key role in infrastructure hardening and wildfire mitigation while working alongside experienced engineering leaders. This is a hands-on, field-focused position based in Houston, TX (77042) with no telework option, offering significant career growth potential with the possibility of conversion to a permanent Leidos role.
Responsibilities
- Interpret utility scope documents and develop detailed, executable design and construction work packages
- Lead engineering calculations for pole loading, guying, voltage drop, and conductor sag/tension
- Coordinate and resolve field conflicts, including underground congestion and clearance issues
- Provide engineering support during construction and post-construction inspections
- Analyze outage root causes and recommend mitigation solutions
- Collaborate on permit packages, ROW applications, and easement documentation for urban design projects
- Perform self-checks on design packages before formal QA/QC review
- Mentor junior engineers or technicians as needed
- Conduct site visits for data collection (pole data, GPS, structure conditions) following strict safety protocols
Required Skills and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited institution
- Minimum 2 years' experience in electric utility distribution design (utility or consulting)
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite, and at least one pole loading tool (O-Calc, Pole Foreman, or equivalent)
- Experience conducting field data collection and using GIS (ESRI-based) tools
- Valid driver's license; ability to perform local field work (rental vehicles and PPE provided)
