Job description
NYU Tulsa is seeking a local, part-time instructor to teach "Food, Culture, and Globalization" for Summer term, May 19 - July 16 2025. The course is a 2-credit offering sponsored by NYU's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. The course is taught in English, and there is a 6 1/2 week condensed summer schedule. The instructor will design the course, prepare for all classes, teach, grade student work, and hold at least one office hour per week. Candidates should be able to demonstrate their teaching experience. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to the diversity of intellectual life at the NYU Tulsa campus.
Course Description
Food, Culture, and Globalization utilizes an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach to explore Tulsa's vibrant cultural landscape and the city's current transformation in food systems. The course investigates how produce, people, and animals have interacted to sustain life in cities, including urban Indigenous communities such as Tulsa. It also examines how these interactions have evolved and how changes in food production, distribution, and preparation impact human health, knowledge systems, livelihoods, social relations, and the natural environment.
Through lectures, readings, and activities beyond the traditional classroom, students will learn about Tulsa's unique food culture, which includes food sovereignty movements, racial history and inequality, farm-to-table community dinners, food trucks, and pop-up kitchens. Students will situate their experiences within broader theoretical and conceptual frameworks related to culture, food, and power, producing new knowledge together.
