Description

The Animal Cruelty Prosecutions Unit, which works alongside the Domestic Violence Bureau in the Special Prosecutionsย Division, is seeking candidates for a managerial position. The Unit is responsible for the investigation and prosecution of all types of misdemeanor and felony animal cruelty cases.ย  These cases involve non-verbal victims and forensic evidence and include the gross neglect and abandonment of household pets, the intentional abuse, injuring, torturing, or killing of animals, and animal fighting.

Responsibilities include:

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Maintain vertical caseload of animal cruelty cases

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Prepare animal cruelty misdemeanor and felony complaints

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Conduct hearings and trials

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Supervise junior ADA handling animal cruelty cases

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Attend all court appearances for animal cruelty cases

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Advise and confer with NYPD Animal Cruelty Investigation Squad

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Interface with ASPCA attorneys and forensic veterinarians

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Assist ASPCA with security petition hearings

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Draft search warrants and other investigative applications

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Participate in and attend animal cruelty and animal protection trainings

Qualifications:

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Minimum 6 years' experience as a prosecutor in New York State

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Extensive knowledge of NY Penal and Criminal Procedure Law

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Strong desire to learn NY Agriculture & Markets Law and case law

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Exceptional research and writing skills for addressing novel issues

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Experience conducting long-term investigations

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Proficiency with search warrants and other investigative tools

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Felony jury trial experience

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Experience in presenting cases to a grand jury

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Superior organizational, multi-tasking, and case management skills

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  - Existing knowledge of a prosecutor's discovery obligations

Title and salary will be commensurate with experience.ย ย 

Salary Range: $120,000ย to $165,000
