Job description

Heavy Civil Estimator — A.J. Contracting of NY LLC

Location: White Plains, NY (Westchester County) | Field work primarily in New York City & surrounding region Employment Type: Full-Time

About Us

A.J. Contracting of NY LLC is a growing heavy civil and site contracting company headquartered in White Plains, NY. We self-perform excavation, deep utilities, storm drainage, concrete flatwork, and asphalt paving across New York City's five boroughs, Westchester County, Connecticut, and New Jersey. Our project portfolio is primarily private sector, working alongside regional developers and general contractors on complex urban and suburban site work. We are a tight-knit operation that values people who take ownership, work smart, and grow with the company.

Position Overview

We are looking for an experienced Heavy Civil Estimator to join our team and take an active role in bidding and securing site work, underground utility, and civil construction projects. This is a hands-on role where you will work directly and closely with company ownership on a day-to-day basis. The right candidate brings deep estimating experience, hits the ground running, and can produce competitive, defensible bids from concept through award without significant ramp-up time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for heavy civil and site work projects (excavation, underground utilities, drainage, concrete, paving)
  • Solicit, review, and level subcontractor and material supplier quotes
  • Analyze project plans, specifications, and bid documents to identify scope, risk, and opportunity
  • Coordinate with ownership and field operations to validate productivity and cost assumptions
  • Attend pre-bid meetings and conduct site walks as needed for new project pursuits
  • Build and maintain relationships with suppliers, subcontractors, and GC contacts
  • Track bid results and support post-bid analysis
  • Assist in preparation of project budgets and work-in-progress (WIP) updates on awarded work
  • Project management involvement post-award is a welcomed plus but not required

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of estimating experience in heavy civil, site work, or underground utilities — we are looking for a seasoned professional, not a candidate in development
  • Proficient use of HeavyBid estimating software is required
  • Familiarity with NYC DOT, DEP, and DDC project types and specifications a strong plus
  • Proficiency in takeoff software (Bluebeam, On-Screen Takeoff, or similar)
  • Solid working knowledge of Excel for pricing and bid management
  • Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, geotech reports, and utility plans
  • Strong communication skills — you will interface directly with ownership, GCs, and owners
  • Self-motivated and comfortable operating in a lean, fast-moving environment

Work Location

This position is primarily office-based out of our White Plains, NY headquarters. Site visits and pre-bid walks will be conducted as needed for new project pursuits.

Compensation

  • Competitive base salary commensurate with experience
  • Health benefits
  • Paid time off
  • Direct visibility and growth opportunity working alongside company ownership

A.J. Contracting of NY LLC is an equal opportunity employer.
