Job description

The maintenance staff ensures that the yard is kept in order and safe as well as ensure plant conditions are maintained throughout the various seasons.

Essential Functions:

• Monitors plant condition and takes care of pruning and fertilizing needs.

• Determines if a plant can be nursed back to health or if they need to be classified as spoilage in inventory. Takes action to get the plant healthy or alerts Inventory Clerk of spoiled plant material.

• Ties trees to head level wire in nursery beds/bins and replace broken stakes on plants.

• Alerts buyers of overstocked quantities of the same plant/variety.

• Keep nursery looking clean and organized. Use of leaf blowers, taking trash bags to dumpsters, organizing sheds, moving pallets to the correct areas after use, etc.

• Various tasks as directed by Yard Management.

• Maintain company issued PPE and tools (Gloves, safety glasses, pruners, etc.)

• Alerts management, sectional care or irrigators if irrigation needs are not being met.

• General care for the nursery grounds, keeping the nursery clean, organized, and safe for employees, customers and vendors.

• General care for nursery stock (plants), ensures plants are watered, handled with care, and are placed in the appropriate location.

• Good knowledge of plant identification, quality, and health. Ability to identify pest and disease.

Additional Tasks:

• May assist in other nursery departments as needed.

• Duties are subject to change at any time per management’s discretion.

Job Specifications:

Constantly works in outdoor weather conditions on uneven ground surfaces and rainy weather. Must be able to remain in a stationary position (standing/sitting). Extensive walking. Stooping, kneeling, and crouching required. Bending at the waist, twisting, turning, and squatting is required.

Lifting requirements: Up to 50 lbs. 75% of the time. Up to 100 lbs. 25% of the time (team lift techniques when required).

Hand movement: Gross grasping for moving plant material. Use of hands/fingers.
