About the Role
The Clinical Informatics Nurse supports the optimization of hospice clinical documentation, EMR workflows, and revenue cycle-related processes. This role evaluates current documentation practices and system build, identifies inefficiencies and redundancies, and collaborates with clinical, quality, and billing teams to enhance performance, improve user experience, and strengthen the organization's ability to capture appropriate reimbursement.
The Clinical Informatics Nurse serves as a subject-matter expert in bridging clinical practice and technology, ensuring documentation meets quality standards and aligns with regulatory requirements while advancing operational efficiency.
Major Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions
Clinical Informatics & Workflow Optimization
  • In collaboration with Hospice leadership, identifies short and long-term optimization strategies. Prioritizes and implements system enhancements.

  • Evaluates hospice EMR workflows to identify inefficiencies, redundancies, and gaps impacting clinical care or revenue capture.

  • Recommends and implements EMR improvements, updates, and configuration changes in collaboration with IT/EMR vendor partners.

  • Develops optimized, user-friendly workflows that support regulatory and hospice best practice and compliance, quality documentation, and accurate, timely billing.

  • Ensures EMR functionality aligns with hospice clinical, regulatory, and billing requirements.

  • Champions user-centered design principles to ensure technology supports patient care.

Documentation Quality & Compliance
  • Partners closely with the Quality department to ensure clinical documentation meets internal standards, regulatory expectations, and payer requirements.

  • Reviews documentation trends to identify training needs, process gaps, or system barriers.

  • Provides guidance on documentation standards, best practices, and workflow consistency across the organization.

Revenue Cycle & Billing Support
  • Analyzes clinical and billing workflow intersections to identify missed revenue opportunities or process breakdowns.

  • Collaborates with billing and rev cycle teams to improve documentation accuracy, coding support, and workflow completeness.

  • Recommends system enhancements that streamline claim submission, reduce denials, and support full, compliant revenue capture

Training, Education, and Change Management
  • Assesses gaps or inefficiencies in staff training needs and ensures training of clinicians and interdisciplinary team member on EMR functionality, documentation, standards, and workflow changes.

  • Develops training content and workflow guides for leaders/trainers to use during onboarding and ongoing education.

  • Identifies barrier to change and leads change management efforts that support adoption of new systems, workflows, and processes.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Serves as a liaison between clinical teams and IT vendors.

  • Works closely with clinicians, leadership, quality, billing, and IT teams to ensure clinical goals, workflows, compliance, and system performance.

  • Participates in process improvement initiatives related to patient care quality, documentation, and clinical operations.

Requirements
Education & Training
Bachelor's degree in Nursing required. Master's Degree in Nursing Informatics or related field preferred.
Licensure
Current & Valid State of Hawaii RN license
Experience & Other Qualifications
Required
  • Minimum 5 years of nursing experience, including 2 years as clinical informatics analyst or EMR superuser.

  • Demonstrated experience in clinical informatics, EMR optimization, or workflow redesign.

  • Ability to translate clinical needs into system design and workflow solutions.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess processes and propose improvements.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Advanced computer and data analysis skills.

  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to influence across the organization.

  • Ability to promote the change process in a positive and supportive manner.

  • Flexible schedule based on business need

Preferred
  • Nursing experience in Hospice or Palliative care

  • Strong understanding of hospice documentation requirements and regulatory standards.

  • Informatics certification (e.g., ANCC Informatics Nursing Certification, HIMSS CPHIMS, vendor-specific certification).

  • Experience with hospice EMR systems; experience with WellSky preferred

  • Demonstrated experience with rev cycle, billing processes, or clinical documentation improvement initiatives.
