What is a Numerical Modelling job?

A Numerical Modelling job involves developing and using mathematical models to simulate real-world systems and processes. This typically includes working with computational tools to analyze physical, engineering, or financial problems. Professionals in this role use numerical techniques to solve complex equations and predict outcomes. They often work in industries like engineering, climate science, finance, and aerospace. Strong programming skills and expertise in applied mathematics are essential for success in this field.

What are the typical daily tasks and responsibilities of someone working in Numerical Modelling?

Professionals in Numerical Modelling typically spend their days designing, implementing, and troubleshooting mathematical models to simulate real-world phenomena or engineering systems. This often involves coding, running simulations, analyzing large datasets, and interpreting the results to inform decision-making. Collaborating with engineers, scientists, or project managers is common, as model outputs need to be integrated into broader projects or presented to non-technical stakeholders. Additionally, continuous learning and staying current with advanced modelling techniques and software updates are integral to remaining effective in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Numerical Modelling position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Numerical Modelling, you require a strong background in mathematics, physics, or engineering, coupled with proficiency in computational methods and data analysis. Experience with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or C++, and familiarity with simulation software or relevant certifications in numerical analysis are typically important. Problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly are valuable soft skills in this field. These competencies are critical for developing accurate models, collaborating effectively with interdisciplinary teams, and delivering insights that inform real-world solutions.

This role is well suited to a technically strong professional who is continuing to deepen their groundwater modelling expertise while working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams. You will be involved across the full project lifecycle-from conceptual model development through numerical modelling and interpretation-while being supported by senior technical leaders and contributing to highquality project delivery for municipal, industrial, Indigenous, and resourcesector clients.

Your Impact

  • Support groundwater flow and contaminant transport modelling for infrastructure, environmental, and remediation projects.
  • Develop and refine conceptual site models and numerical groundwater models under senior technical guidance.
  • Assist with the design and interpretation of hydrogeological investigations, including aquifer testing and data analysis.
  • Translate modelling results into clear, technically sound inputs for reports, regulators, and project teams.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary water, environmental, and engineering teams to integrate groundwater science into broader project solutions.
  • Contribute to proposal development, project planning, and technical documentation.
  • Support the mentorship of junior team members through knowledge sharing and collaboration.
  • Uphold WSP's safety, quality, and sustainability standards across all project work.

  • Demonstrated experience in groundwater modelling using industrystandard software (e.g., MODFLOWbased platforms).
  • Experience with hydrogeological assessments, aquifer characterization, and interpretation of field and monitoring data.
  • Background supporting environmental, infrastructure, or remediation projects within a consulting environment.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts in written and verbal formats.
