How much do nuclear simulator jobs pay per hour?
What are some typical responsibilities of a Nuclear Simulator in a nuclear power facility?
A Nuclear Simulator is primarily responsible for operating and maintaining full-scope or partial-scope reactor simulators used for training power plant operators. This includes developing and running simulation scenarios, troubleshooting simulator issues, and ensuring the training environment closely mirrors real operating conditions. The role often involves close collaboration with instructors, operations staff, and nuclear engineers to tailor training to regulatory requirements and operational needs. Daily tasks can range from technical updates and scenario programming to providing real-time support during operator evaluations. This hands-on position is essential for maintaining the safety and effectiveness of nuclear facility operations.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Nuclear Simulator position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Nuclear Simulator, you need a strong foundation in nuclear engineering principles, reactor operations, and safety protocols, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in power plant environments. Familiarity with advanced simulation software, control room interfaces, and, in some cases, NRC reactor operator certification is essential. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are highly valued in this role. These competencies are critical for ensuring accurate training scenarios, maintaining operational safety, and supporting the ongoing qualification of nuclear plant staff.
What is a Nuclear Simulator job?
A Nuclear Simulator job involves developing, operating, and maintaining simulation software and hardware that replicate nuclear reactor operations for training and analysis. These simulators help train plant operators, test procedures, and improve safety protocols without impacting real-world reactor operations. Professionals in this role typically have expertise in nuclear engineering, computer modeling, and control systems.

As a key member of the SNP team, primary duties will include:
Expertise in Nuclear Core Multiphysics (MP) Modeling: Experience with the physics involved in nuclear core dynamics, including heat transfer, fluid mechanics, structures, and nuclear engineering. Proficiency in at least one of these areas, with a strong focus on nuclear engineering, is essential.
Nuclear Reactor Operations: Familiarity with nuclear reactor startup, shutdown, cooldown, testing, and controls is highly desired. Experience with simulating these operational phases is a plus.
Nuclear Reactor Core Materials: Understanding of the materials and nuclear properties of nuclear reactor cores, particularly those used in nuclear thermal propulsion systems.
Simulation Software Proficiency: Experience with simulation tools such as MCNP and OpenMC is highly desired. Familiarity with MOOSE is also valuable.
Nuclear Fuel Performance: Solid understanding of nuclear fuel performance, including the ability to model the nuclear, chemical, and mechanical effects of fuel under varying operational conditions.
Create/utilize stability analysis tools to assess engine stability from ROCETS model results.
Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Proven ability to interface successfully across multiple organizations and disciplines, ideally in a leadership or collaborative capacity.
Software Integration: Strong ability to efficiently integrate disparate software systems and work comfortably in a networked environment, particularly on Linux systems and high-performance computing (HPC) platforms.
