How much do nuclear security manager jobs pay per year?
What is a nuclear security manager?
A Nuclear Security Manager is responsible for overseeing the safety and security of nuclear facilities, materials, and personnel. They develop and enforce security protocols to prevent threats such as theft, sabotage, or unauthorized access. Their role includes coordinating with law enforcement, regulatory agencies, and internal teams to ensure compliance with national and international nuclear security regulations. Additionally, they conduct risk assessments, implement emergency response plans, and provide training to security personnel.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a nuclear security manager?
To thrive as a Nuclear Security Manager, you need a solid background in physical security, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance, often supported by a degree in criminal justice or a related field. Familiarity with security technologies, access control systems, and certifications such as Certified Protection Professional (CPP) or Department of Energy (DOE) clearance are typically required. Strong leadership, decision-making, and effective communication skills are crucial for managing teams and responding to high-risk situations. These abilities are vital for ensuring the safety of nuclear facilities, meeting strict regulatory standards, and maintaining preparedness for emergency situations.
What are some common challenges faced by nuclear security managers, and how is support typically structured to address them?
Nuclear Security Managers often face challenges such as adapting to evolving threat landscapes, ensuring full regulatory compliance, and maintaining a high state of vigilance among security personnel. To address these, managers typically work within a structured team consisting of security officers, technical specialists, and compliance experts, and they have access to ongoing training and simulation exercises. Collaboration with law enforcement agencies and governmental regulators is also a routine part of the job, ensuring that best practices are implemented and updated as needed. Most facilities invest in robust support systems and clear protocols to help managers anticipate and respond to potential incidents swiftly and effectively.

As part of our team, you will apply critical thinking, technical analysis, program coordination, and project management skills to address complex transportation security challenges.
The Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND) performs a wide range of scientific, technical, and programmatic activities in all facets of the global nuclear enterprise from nonproliferation project support and management to research and development (R&D) pertaining to nuclear materials processing, nuclear safeguards and security, security program management, and transportation security of radioactive materials.

- Support the development and implementation of transportation security strategies, plans, procedures, and technical approaches.
- Assist with the planning and execution of transportation security exercises, workshops, technical exchanges, meetings, and other program activities.
- Evaluate transportation security challenges and develop practical approaches that integrate technical, operational, policy, safety, and security considerations.
- Support technical assessments associated with the transportation of nuclear and radioactive materials.
- Collaborate with colleagues across ORNL scientific directorates and service organizations to support transportation security program objectives.
- Support DOE and NNSA domestic and international transportation security missions through technical planning, analysis, coordination, and project execution.
