What is an NPR internship?

An NPR internship is a temporary, educational position offered by National Public Radio (NPR) to students or recent graduates interested in media, journalism, production, or related fields. Interns gain hands-on experience working alongside NPR professionals in areas such as news reporting, audio production, digital media, marketing, and more. These internships are designed to help interns develop practical skills, build professional networks, and gain insight into the operations of a major public media organization. NPR internships are typically offered during the fall, spring, and summer, and may be paid or unpaid depending on the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an NPR Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an NPR Intern, you need strong writing, research, and communication skills, typically supported by coursework or experience in journalism, media, or related fields. Familiarity with audio editing software (such as Adobe Audition), social media platforms, and digital content management systems is often expected. Curiosity, adaptability, and the ability to work collaboratively are standout soft skills for this position. These skills and qualities are important because they enable interns to contribute effectively to dynamic newsrooms and learn from fast-paced, real-world media environments.

What kinds of projects and responsibilities can NPR interns expect to work on during their internship?

NPR interns are typically assigned to specific teams or departments, such as news, digital media, programming, or marketing, and are given hands-on responsibilities that contribute directly to NPR's output. Depending on their placement, interns may assist with research, support live shows, help produce podcasts, write digital content, or contribute to social media strategy. Interns often work closely with experienced journalists and producers, gaining exposure to the editorial process and participating in team meetings. This collaborative environment allows interns to build practical skills, expand their professional network, and explore potential career paths within public media.
