Nurse Practitioner - Psychiatry
Position Overview
As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, you assess patients with mental health concerns in outpatient or integrated care settings.
You diagnose conditions, formulate treatment plans, and coordinate care with psychiatrists, therapists, and primary care providers. You manage psychotropic medications, monitor safety and response, and provide brief psychotherapy as needed in a collaborative, patient-centered care model.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and diagnostic interviews.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans including medication management and psychotherapy options.
  • Order, monitor, and interpret psychiatric assessments and laboratory tests as appropriate.
  • Initiate and adjust pharmacotherapy, monitor side effects, and ensure safety planning.
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and primary care teams.
  • Document care in the electronic health record and ensure continuity of care.
  • Educate patients and families about diagnoses, treatment options, and adherence strategies.
Qualifications
Education:
Graduate degree in nursing with PMHNP specialization (MSN or DNP) and eligibility for PMHNP certification.
Licensure:
Current active registered nurse license and state license to practice as a nurse practitioner with psychiatric mental health privileges.
Certifications:
  • ANCC Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) board certification or equivalent
Experience or Skills:
Experience in psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and patient education; strong documentation and collaboration skills; proficiency with electronic health records.
Experience
  • Clinical experience conducting psychiatric evaluations in outpatient or inpatient settings
  • Experience coordinating care with a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience managing psychotropic medications and monitoring adverse effects
Preferred
  • Telepsychiatry or integrated behavioral health experience
  • Additional psychotherapy training or comfort with brief therapy modalities
  • bilingual capabilities or experience with diverse populations (if applicable)
Work Environment
Work in outpatient clinics, community mental health centers, or hospital-based practices with a collaborative team.
Typically a full-time clinical schedule with routine electronic health record documentation and periodic on-call coverage; may involve safety planning and crisis coordination with the care team.
