What is an NP hourly job?

NP Hourly jobs refer to nurse practitioner positions that are compensated on an hourly basis rather than with a fixed salary. These roles are often found in clinics, hospitals, or urgent care settings where flexible scheduling is needed. Hourly NP jobs can offer greater flexibility for both employers and practitioners, allowing NPs to work part-time, per diem, or on a contract basis. This type of employment can be ideal for nurse practitioners seeking work-life balance or supplemental income.

What are the typical responsibilities and work schedule for a nurse practitioner in an hourly position?

Nurse Practitioners in hourly roles often work flexible shifts, which can include evenings, nights, or weekends, depending on the healthcare facility’s needs. Their daily responsibilities generally involve conducting patient assessments, diagnosing health conditions, prescribing medications, and collaborating with physicians and other healthcare professionals. Hourly NPs may also be involved in patient education and follow-up care. This structure offers variety and the ability to balance work with personal commitments, but it may also involve adapting to changing schedules or patient volumes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a nurse practitioner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nurse Practitioner, you need advanced clinical knowledge, patient assessment skills, and a master's or doctoral degree in nursing along with national NP certification and state licensure. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), diagnostic tools, and telehealth platforms is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly help NPs build trust and collaborate effectively with patients and healthcare teams. These competencies are vital for delivering high-quality, patient-centered care in diverse and evolving healthcare environments.

Job description

Join the Gastrointestinal Oncology Care Team as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant specializing in pancreatic cancer. In this challenging and rewarding role, you will build meaningful relationships with patients and families, help guide them through complex treatment decisions, and contribute to highly coordinated, multidisciplinary cancer care.
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) will be an integral part of our adult Medical Oncology outpatient practice, seeing adult patients with gastrointestinal malignancies as part of our GI care teams.
NPs and PAs see patients at initial consultation and follow established patients, guiding them through their treatment plan in close collaboration with medical oncologists. The NP or PA manages treatment-related toxicities for patients who are going through standard and research-based cancer treatments including chemotherapy, immunotherapies, and targeted therapies. The role spans curative-intent treatment, survivorship, evaluation of treatment response or disease progression, clinical trial enrollment, symptom management, and end-of-life care. This breadth makes the work both clinically demanding and deeply meaningful.
This role is well suited for an NP or PA who is energized by complex oncology care and values continuous learning. The successful candidate will bring strong communication, teamwork, clinical assessment, and critical-thinking skills while developing deep expertise in pancreatic and gastrointestinal cancers. The individual NP or PA will work within the GI Oncology Tumor Group. The GI group has 6 care teams comprising Consultants, NPs, PAs, RNs, and other allied health professionals. These teams are subdivided into the following subspecialty focus areas: Colorectal, Gastroesophageal, Pancreatic, Hepatobiliary, and Neuroendocrine cancers, with the goal of streamlining patient care and clinical trial enrollment. There is cross coverage to provide support to patients with all GI malignancies. The teams work in close collaboration with colleagues from Gastroenterology, Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care, and other multidisciplinary teams. The NP or PA will have a central role on the team to provide continuity for patients, serve as a provider resource for nursing, and help with coordination of care across multidisciplinary teams. Our NPs and PAs are true experts in their areas of focus.
Once established clinically, the oncology team is very supportive of mentoring NP PAs in other academic and research pursuits. We take pride in working with individuals to identify their professional development interests and foster them. We strive to see our Advanced Practitioners excel in clinical practice, research, and education shields.
If you are drawn to complex clinical decision-making, meaningful patient relationships, collaborative practice, and the opportunity to become an expert in GI oncology, we encourage you to apply. Oncology experience is valued, but motivated candidates with strong clinical skills and a commitment to learning will be supported as they grow into the role.
Qualifications
Masters-prepared graduate of an accredited school of nursing and Nurse Practitioner program. Current Minnesota RN license and certification (or eligible to be certified) as a FNP, ANP, or ACNP (certification must be obtained within 6 months of employment date). Must be eligible for DEA registration and billing privileges.
or
Graduate of accredited Physician Assistant program with current PA certification by NCCPA and registration as a PA by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice (or eligible). Must be eligible for DEA registration and billing privileges.
