Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

San Diego Blood Bank is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization also operating as Southern California Blood Bank. We serve hospitals in San Diego, Los Angeles and Orange Counties. We are the primary blood provider to Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego and the safety net for hospitals in our region. Every year, more than 150,000 units of blood provided by San Diego Blood Bank are transfused into patients of all ages, socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds throughout Southern California. These patients are struggling with life-threatening medical conditions including cancer and other blood disorders, severe burns, organ transplants, emergency surgery, trauma, childbirth complications and more.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW (Job Summary)

The Software Engineer I reports to the Lead Software Engineer and develops and maintains browser-based business application across the full technology stack. The role builds both the user-facing interfaces that allow end users to accomplish business tasks and the server-side APls, business logic, and data layer that power them.

This position receives structured mentorship from the Lead Software Engineer through code review, pair programming, and regular coaching, and is expected to grow steadily in skill and independence. The position will take an assistive role in other development and IT projects as the need arises.

The Software Engineer I is expected to make effective use of Al-assisted development tools as a partner in day-to-day programming, applying sound judgment to review and validate Al-generated code.

The Software Engineer I position will provide excellent customer service.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE (Key Responsibilities):

  • Develop, test, and maintain features across the full application stack, including user interface components, APls, business logic, and database components, under the direction of the Lead Software Engineer.
  • Translate wireframes, mockups, and business requirements into responsive, accessible browser-based interfaces.
  • Develop and maintain database schemas, queries, and data access code following the architecture established by the Lead Software Engineer.
  • Implement data validation, error handling, and security controls within assigned features.
  • Build and maintain integrations with internal systems and third-party services.
  • Write clean, well-documented code following established team coding standards and version control workflow.
  • Write and maintain automated tests for assigned features.
  • Participate in code reviews, pair programming sessions, and team planning meetings.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve defects in assigned areas of the application; test fixes to ensure problems have been adequately resolved.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (Minimum Qualifications)

Education:

  • Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field/discipline from an accredited college or university, completion of a software development training program, or equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.

Experience:

  • 1-3 years of software development experience,  or a strong portfolio of academic, personal, or training program projects.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
  • Working knowledge of at least one server-side programming language (such as Python, C#, Java, or Node.js).
  • Familiarity with a modern front-end framework (such as React, Vue, or Angular) preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of relational databases and SOL.
  • Familiarity with Git-based version control.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Eagerness to learn, accept feedback, and grow within a small team.
