Job description

Inside the Role Inside the Role The Detroit Aftertreatment OBD Engineering team develops and validates diagnostic strategies to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements across Daimler Truck’s heavy-duty powertrain portfolio. We rigorously develop and validate OBD monitors to support certification readiness, working closely with cross-functional and international teams to deliver globally competitive solutions while meeting local legislative requirements. In addition to core technical responsibilities, the role includes driving test and report automation initiatives to improve efficiency, consistency, and data-driven decision-making. Our engineers are motivated by the opportunity to work on advanced emissions and diagnostic technologies that support the evolution of next-generation propulsion systems. This role offers the chance to take on challenging and meaningful work, helping deliver innovative solutions that keep the world moving—both today and into the future.

Position offers a starting salary range of $90,000 – $115,000 USD Pay offered dependent on knowledge, skills, and experience.

What You Drive at DTNA
  • Lead development, validation, & release of aftertreatment OBD control strategies.
  • Understand and interpret emissions and OBD regulations in context of how the requirements will be fulfilled by Detroit engines and aftertreatments sold in the U.S. and abroad.
  • Assess aftertreatment performance and emissions margin by reviewing data gathered in performance test cells, durability, engineering vehicles and the reliability growth fleet.
  • Lead and implement test and report automation initiatives to improve test efficiency.
  • Establish test procedures (including instrumentation, fixturing, test environment) to fulfill DVPR requirements.
  • Utilize structured problem solving methods to identify root cause and integrate corrective actions into new or existing aftertreatment software.
  • Analyze data, draw conclusions, and provide recommendations of technical results to the management team.
  • Leverage strong relationships with Global counterparts to efficiently test and release aftertreatment software.
  • Independently schedule work including issuing work orders, monitor progress, and resolve problems in order to ensure timely completion of projects.
  • Generate ideas to reduce product cost and improve quality.
  • Create project plans and timelines, and assist management with defining budget requirements.
  • Promptly resolve plant issues and field problems.
  • Lead cross-functional activities with regional and Global counterparts in Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Sales, Purchasing, and Suppliers.
  • Communicate effectively and maintain professional/social interaction in a multi-cultural and International environment.
  • Improve knowledge and skills through training; actively identify areas of potential self-improvement and alert management of opportunities for training.
  • Lead initiatives to improve product quality, process efficiency, and employee satisfaction.
  • Maintain daily record of work hours by project.
  • Other activities as necessary and/or assigned.
Knowledge You Should Bring
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology (ABET Accredited University).
  • 3-5 years of aftertreatment engineering experience in the Automotive, or Commercial Vehicle Industry.
  • 3+ years of experience interpreting regulations and developing control strategies to fulfill the requirements.
  • 3+ years of experience utilizing MATLAB Simulink for modeling and development.
  • 3+ years of programming experience to automate data processing and reporting.
  • Strong electrical or mechanical aptitude.
  • Experience identifying and solving the root cause of complex problems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and able to work with and get work done effectively through others.
  • Ability to think independently and critically to formulate plans and make decisions in a fast paced, emerging and sometimes ambiguous environment.
  • Ability to work in a truly global environment with different cultures to collaborate successfully.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and inform management of any barriers.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong PC skills including MS Office and database tools.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 15%.
Exceptional Candidates Might Have
  • Master of Science or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering (ABET Accredited University).
  • Ability to develop Powertrain control strategies 3+ years of Powertrain development experience.
  • Understand and speak German language.
