What are non-commissioned security officers?

Non-commissioned security officers are security professionals who do not carry firearms as part of their job responsibilities. They are typically responsible for observing and reporting suspicious activities, maintaining order, and enforcing rules on the premises they protect. These officers often perform tasks such as monitoring surveillance equipment, patrolling assigned areas, and providing customer service. Unlike commissioned security officers, they are not authorized to carry weapons but may use non-lethal tools like batons or pepper spray, depending on local laws and company policy.

What are some common challenges faced by non-commissioned security officers and how can they be addressed?

Non-commissioned security officers often face challenges such as maintaining vigilance during long or overnight shifts, managing access control under pressure, and effectively de-escalating minor conflicts without the authority to make arrests. Building strong communication skills and staying updated with site-specific protocols can help address these issues. Additionally, working closely with supervisors and commissioned officers ensures that any incidents are promptly reported and handled according to company policy, fostering a safer work environment.
