What is a non-commercial driver?

A non-commercial driver is someone who operates a vehicle for personal or family use rather than for business or commercial purposes. This typically includes driving cars, SUVs, or light trucks without transporting goods or passengers for hire. Non-commercial drivers are required to have a standard driver's license, not a commercial driver’s license (CDL), and must follow state-specific traffic laws. The requirements for obtaining and maintaining a non-commercial driver’s license vary by jurisdiction, but generally include passing a written test and a road skills test.
