General Laborer Marine and Terminal
Avondale Global Gateway is a 254-acre former shipyard on Mile 108 of the Mississippi River, redeveloped into a multimodal logistics terminal with significant warehousing and storage capabilities. T. Parker Host acquired Avondale in 2018 from Huntington Ingalls Industries and has since reestablished its iconic prominence into a model of ingenuity. Avondale Global Gateway is a historic property with four docks and over one mile of waterfront, uniquely accommodating ships, barges, rail and trucks. This facility offers immediate access to the regional and interstate highway system and is positioned at the interchange of six Class I railroads, creating the ability for cargo to be distributed in all directions.
Avondale has become integral to HOST's continued efforts of shifting the transportation paradigm and rethinking how cargo moves - providing exceptional service and solutions to our customers.
Position Summary: In this position, the team member will perform general labor duties, in according to the below job description for Stevedoring and terminal operations. Duties will include, but not limited to: rigging, painting, housekeeping, trash removal, general upkeep of all Terminal property, and any other duties assigned by management.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Responsible for assisting in duties associated with the loading and unloading of vessels or other marine activities and the movement of cargoes within the terminal.
  • Provide support and labor for Terminal and Rail operations
  • Rigging and Responsible for the constant inspection of various rigging and cables used for the discharge and loading of various cargoes.
  • Stacking/restacking cargo as required.
  • Banding of cargo using material specific tools.
  • General upkeep and trash/debris removal of vessels and the terminal.
  • Basic labor duties in support of stevedoring and warehouse operations in the terminal.
  • Cleaning and upkeep of terminal and marine mobile equipment.
  • All labor related functions as required by management.
  • Accountability for assigned tools, equipment, and PPE.
  • Shows a willingness to learn other jobs and skill such as operating equipment.
  • Equipment operation including manlift, small forklift, skid steer.
  • Working with power tools and hand tools.
  • The ability to take direction on a variety of labor tasks and execute responsibilities as assigned
  • Blocking and bracing of trucks and railcars, cutting and removal of metal bands.
  • Ability to adjust to different assignments throughout the day/week.

Education, Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • HS diploma / GED preferred
  • Ability to respond to issues quickly, safely and effectively in a fast-paced, stressful operating environment
  • TWIC or ability to obtain a TWIC required
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather
  • Reliable transportation
  • Must be available to work varied hours, shifts including days/nights/weekends/holidays as required

Physical Requirements:
  • Must meet "fit for duty" requirements upon job offer (pre-employment physical and drug test)
  • The employee must meet physical requirements including but not limited to, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing up/down ladders and stairs, to include but not limited to Jacobs ladders, ship hold ladders and gangways.
  • Negotiate uneven and moving surfaces.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and work at protected heights.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Perform work in dusty environment and all types of temperature/weather conditions.
