Essential Job Duties
Join a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment where you will help advance the frontiers of mathematical biology, machine learning, and scientific computing. Working closely with Kevin Flores, you will develop innovative computational and mathematical frameworks that transform complex biological data into interpretable, predictive insights.
In this role, you will apply applied mathematics, deep learning, inverse methods, and scientific computing techniques to tackle complex research challenges involving heterogeneous dynamical systems with biologically and medically relevant applications. You will have the opportunity to shape emerging research directions, contribute to high-impact publications and grant initiatives, and collaborate with experts across mathematics, data science, and experimental biology.

Key responsibilities will fall within the four functional areas below.

Research & Computational Model Development
  • Develop and implement advanced mathematical, statistical, and machine learning models to analyze complex biological and scientific datasets.
  • Design interpretable dynamical systems frameworks using biologically informed neural networks (BINNs), differential equations, inverse methods, and scientific machine learning approaches.
  • Build scalable, reproducible computational workflows and optimize code for high-performance scientific computing applications.
  • Apply multi-task learning and data-driven modeling techniques to heterogeneous single-cell and multivariate time series data.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Scientific Discovery
  • Partner with interdisciplinary research teams and experimental collaborators to translate theoretical models into practical scientific applications.
  • Contribute to the design and interpretation of perturbation experiments and high-dimensional biological data analyses.
  • Support the identification of regulatory interactions, prediction of system-level responses, and generation of actionable scientific insights.

Scholarly Contribution & Research Leadership
  • Contribute to peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, and presentations for national and international research conferences.
  • Participate in collaborative grant proposal development and broader research strategy initiatives focused on scientific machine learning and mathematical biology.
  • Help foster a collaborative research culture through seminars, workshops, working groups, and cross-disciplinary training activities.
Mentorship & Research Dissemination
  • Support graduate and undergraduate student engagement in computational and interdisciplinary research activities.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of research methods through open-source software, reproducible workflows, and collaborative knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Stay current with emerging methodologies in applied mathematics, machine learning, and data science to continuously advance research capabilities.
If you are excited by the opportunity to apply mathematics and machine learning to complex biological systems, thrive in highly collaborative research environments, and enjoy translating challenging scientific questions into innovative computational solutions, we encourage you to apply.
