Job Type: On-Call, Variable Time

Compensation: $28 - $34 per hour, based on relevant experience

JOB SUMMARY: The Archaeologist II supports cultural resource projects across a variety of projects within the Great Basin Region.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions:

  • Serve as Crew Member/Archaeologist for assigned projects

  • Conduct Class III/Phase I cultural resource surveys and independently document archaeological sites and isolated occurrences/isolated finds (IOs/IFs)

  • Perform construction monitoring, including daily compliance inspections, identification and documentation of cultural materials, and implementation of stop-work and avoidance protocols as needed

  • Complete cultural desktop reviews, pre-field literature and records checks, and background/archival research to inform field strategies and reporting

  • Prepare draft deliverables (monitoring reports, technical excavation/testing logs, site forms), and support deliverable coordination, review, and submission to agencies

  • Utilize field technology (ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 paired with sub-meter GPS receivers; tablets such as iPad or Samsung Galaxy) for data collection and navigation

  • Collect GPS and other geospatial data with sub-meter accuracy; review and verify site location accuracy and attributes

  • Participate in project meetings; follow supervisor instruction and adjust work based on feedback; maintain regular and punctual attendance and communication

  • Adhere to safety protocols and company culture of safety and employee ownership; comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Environmental Planning, Environmental Engineering, Archaeology, Architectural History, or closely related field

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience

  • Proficiency in prehistoric and/or historic archaeology in assigned project regions; ability to describe/differentiate geological and cultural strata and identify archaeological deposits

  • Competence in documenting archaeological sites and IOs/IFs; ability to conduct probing or shovel testing

  • Strong navigation skills (GPS/compass); ability to operate 4WD vehicles over rough terrain.

  • Ability to be listed on agency permits as Field Technician/Monitor

  • Clear communication, organization, accuracy, motivation, dependability, and trustworthiness; ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team

  • Survey an average of 30 acres/5 miles per day and carry personal health and safety equipment (i.e., personal water, sunscreen, etc.) when surveying

  • Work in moderate weather conditions (fluctuating temperatures and inclement weather, including rain and snow)

  • Perform work duties independently and efficiently, while working in a team setting

  • Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with employees and vendors

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience as an archaeological technician or monitor

  • Prior experience in the designated region

  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 applications and sub-meter GPS receivers

  • Previous trainings related to NHPA, NEPA, FERC, or other cultural/environmental regulations

  • Strong writing and editing skills

  • Spanish language proficiency a plus
