What is a no experience fly in fly out?

A No Experience Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) job is an entry-level position in the mining, oil and gas, or construction industries where workers are flown to remote job sites for a set period before returning home for time off. These roles often include general labor, kitchen staff, cleaning, or trade assistant positions and typically require minimal prior experience. Employers usually provide accommodation, meals, and transport, making FIFO an attractive option for those looking to start a career in resource industries.

What is the typical work schedule and living arrangement for a no experience fly in fly out position?

In most No Experience Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) roles, you will work in blocks or 'shifts' such as two weeks on and one week off, staying at on-site accommodation facilities provided by the employer during your rostered work period. The living arrangements usually include meals, shared recreational spaces, and basic amenities, so you’ll have what you need while away from home. This unique schedule allows for concentrated work periods followed by extended time off, making it important to be comfortable living and working closely with others in a remote environment. Most teams are diverse and supportive, and you will quickly build close working relationships with your colleagues. Adjusting to the FIFO lifestyle can be challenging at first, but many people find it rewarding and a great entry point into industries like mining, construction, and resource extraction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a no experience fly in fly out position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a No Experience Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) role, reliability, physical fitness, and a willingness to learn are essential, with most positions requiring minimal or no previous work experience but often a high school diploma or equivalent. Basic safety training or certifications such as a White Card (for construction) or First Aid may be needed depending on the job site and industry. Strong communication, adaptability to remote or changing environments, and teamwork set candidates apart. These capabilities are vital for succeeding in demanding FIFO schedules and contributing positively to remote site operations.

Job description

Location: This role will work onsite at our office located in Bothell, WA.
Travel: Up to 10%, domestic or international
Job ID:
1773

The Role:

We are looking for a Production Support Engineer to join our Manufacturing and Production Team. As the Production Support Engineer, you'll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world's best quantum computers to solve the world's most complex problems.
In this role, you will serve as a critical engineering anchor for our production floor. In this role, you will not typically be behind a desk; instead, you will be on the floor daily, supporting our production technicians as they build, integrate, and test highly complex quantum computing hardware. You will be the first line of defense for any technical blockers, deviations, or process inefficiencies, ensuring our builds remain on schedule without sacrificing IonQ's quality standards and processes.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide real-time engineering support to production technicians experiencing build, assembly, or test issues.
  • Investigate failures or components that do not fit/function as intended, triaging the NC process and determining disposition (rework, scrap, or MRB escalation).
  • Review and update assembly documentation, SOPs, and build logs when discrepancies are found on the floor.
  • Design, procure, or improve fixtures, jigs, and shop aids to make assemblies safer, faster, and more repeatable for technicians.
  • Ensure the production line has the necessary calibrated tooling, specialized equipment, and technical clarity to execute builds.
  • Act as the bridge between the production technicians and the core Design/Manufacturing Engineering teams, translating floor struggles into actionable design-for-manufacturability (DFM) feedback.
  • Initiate and document Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), helping to track quality trends on the line.
  • Assist in onboarding and training technicians on engineering specifications and delicate handling procedures (e.g., optics, ultra-high vacuum components, or precision cabling).

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • 2+ years of experience in a hands-on production, manufacturing, or hardware development environment.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot hardware issues on the fly in a high-tech manufacturing setting.
  • Experience reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings, CAD models, schematics, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust with technicians on the floor and communicate effectively with manufacturing and design engineers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with high-precision assemblies, optomechanical builds, fiber optics, or ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems.
  • A history of independently resolving hardware failures with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with cleanroom environments (Class 100 to 10,000).
  • Familiarity with CAD, PLM software and ERP/MRP Systems.

The total compensation package includes base, bonus, equity, and a range of benefit options found on our career site.
