Job description

Operational Excellence Specialist – Houston, TX

Operational Excellence | Continuous Improvement | Lean / Process Improvement | Operations

Mustang Rental Services is seeking an Operational Excellence Specialist to help improve how we work across our rental operations. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving problems, working with data, improving processes, and partnering directly with employees and leaders to turn ideas into measurable results.

You’ll work across our operations to identify opportunities, facilitate improvement activities, strengthen standard work, and help build a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.

Whether you already have experience with Lean/Continuous Improvement or have an operations, engineering, quality, or business background and want to build your career in Operational Excellence, this is an opportunity to make a visible impact in a hands-on environment.

What You'll Do

As an Operational Excellence Specialist, you’ll work closely with branch and operational teams to improve efficiency, consistency, productivity, and customer outcomes. Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead and support Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives across branch operations
  • Facilitate Kaizen, 5S, process mapping, root cause analysis, and structured problem-solving activities
  • Analyze processes to identify waste, inefficiencies, risks, cost drivers, and opportunities for improvement
  • Help teams develop and implement practical solutions that improve productivity, quality, cycle time, and execution
  • Support standard work development and adoption across locations
  • Monitor operational KPIs and performance trends to identify gaps and improvement opportunities
  • Participate in daily accountability and operational performance reviews
  • Track improvement projects, action items, results, and measurable benefits
  • Support visual management tools, tier boards, dashboards, and Continuous Improvement reporting
  • Help deliver Lean and Continuous Improvement training to employees and frontline leaders
  • Coach employees on basic Lean principles, structured problem solving, and everyday improvement
  • Partner with operations, quality, and support teams to implement and sustain improvements
  • Build employee engagement and encourage teams to take ownership of improvement opportunities
  • Help ensure improvements are implemented, measured, and sustained

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who is curious, analytical, collaborative, and comfortable working directly with operational teams.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, Operations, or a related field, or 1–3 years of relevant experience in operations, quality, engineering, or Continuous Improvement
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • Foundational understanding of Lean, Continuous Improvement, process improvement, or structured problem solving
  • Experience working with KPIs, operational data, or performance reporting
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, hands-on operational environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with ERP systems, dashboards, or reporting tools is a plus
  • Ability to build relationships and work effectively with employees at different levels of the organization
  • A proactive mindset with the curiosity and initiative to challenge existing processes and find better ways to work
  • Lean Six Sigma or Green Belt certification is a plus, but not required.

What Success Looks Like

In this role, you'll help Mustang Rental Services:

  • Improve consistency and standard work across branch operations
  • Reduce process variation, inefficiencies, and unnecessary costs
  • Improve productivity, throughput, and cycle times
  • Strengthen operational accountability and performance visibility
  • Increase employee participation in Continuous Improvement
  • Build sustainable processes that support continued growth and profitability
