What you'll do
Viasat is seeking a Program Engineer (PE) to support the Advanced Network Products Business. You will epitomize technical excellence by digesting new technology quickly, advising on roadmaps, and leading interdisciplinary teams to solve complex customer challenges. The ideal candidate is a "Swiss Army Knife" engineer-an expert in inventing systems and networking. They are just as comfortable in high-level proposal meetings as when performing hands-on hardware fixing in the lab.
The day-to-day
  • Lead Technical Execution: Drive the design, development, and testing of complex networking products while serving as the primary technical resource for interdisciplinary teams and management.
  • System Integration & Maintenance: Champion requirements decomposition and integration for platforms like FSO, MOJO, MDD, NMR Devices, and NetAgility, ensuring the "big picture" is maintained throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Hands-on Problem Solving: Lead root cause analysis for hardware and software defects. This includes "in-the-trenches" tasks: log collection, cable ring-outs, continuity testing, short analysis, soldering, and cable termination.
  • Operational Planning: Manage program/event planning dependencies, specifically for customer demos, ensuring rigorous preparation to reduce execution risk.
  • Mentorship & Reviews: Perform technical design and code reviews while coaching junior engineers to foster team development.

What you'll need
  • 5+ years' hands-on experience with complex system verification
  • 2+ years' experience engaging with complex systems that include Hardware/Software integration and a strong knowledge of hardware/software interfaces
  • Proven understanding of TCP/IP, VLANs, trunking, Ethernet protocols, and OSI layers
  • Proficiency with tools like iperf and Viavi TBERD
  • Validated experience with C, C#, and Python
  • Proficiency in Linux command line with skills to use modern development tools for automation
  • Solid communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in the fields of computer engineering, computing sciences, or electronic engineering
  • US Government position. US Citizenship required
  • Must be able to obtain a United States Secret Clearance
  • Ability to travel up to 20% both domestically and internationally
  • Must be able to work onsite in our Carlsbad, CA office at least 3 times per week

What will help you on the job
  • Master's degree in computer engineering, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, or comparable professional background or equivalent experience
  • Previous experience as a project engineer, software lead, or rigor lead.
  • A "no job too small" attitude and the ability to remain flexible in ambiguous environments.
  • The proactive approach to see potential problems before they manifest.
