Do NIH postdocs get benefits?

Benefits are usually provided through the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program and other government-sponsored programs, and eligibility may depend on appointment type and duration.

How long can you be a postdoc in NIH?

The NIH typically allows postdoctoral researchers to hold positions for up to five years, with extensions possible in certain circumstances. Postdoc appointments are often structured as temporary, research-focused roles that may be renewed or transitioned into other positions based on funding and performance.

Will NIH increase postdoc salary?

NIH postdoctoral pay is typically determined by the NIH pay scale, which is reviewed and adjusted annually based on federal budget allocations and policy changes. Salary increases for NIH postdocs are usually implemented through these standardized pay scales, and any adjustments are publicly announced by NIH authorities. Researchers should stay informed through official NIH updates for the most current salary information.

What is the NIH postdoc salary in 2026?

As of recent years, the starting postdoc salary has been around $54,000, with potential increases for experience and additional stipends for certain research environments. Exact figures for 2026 will be published by NIH closer to that year.
