What is a night shift software engineer?

A Night Shift Software Engineer is responsible for developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting software applications during nighttime hours. Companies with global operations or 24/7 services often require engineers to monitor systems, handle urgent issues, and support international teams. This role may involve debugging, deploying updates, or responding to incidents to ensure smooth operations. It requires strong problem-solving skills, adaptability to late hours, and effective communication with day shift teams.

What are some unique challenges of working as a night shift software engineer?

One unique challenge in this role is managing communication and coordination with day-shift teams, as you may have limited overlap for real-time collaboration. You may also need to troubleshoot critical incidents or perform maintenance tasks during planned downtime, which often occurs overnight. Strong self-discipline and time management are important to maintain productivity and work-life balance. However, working nights can offer greater autonomy, fewer interruptions, and opportunities to handle high-impact technical responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a night shift software engineer?

To excel as a Night Shift Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, familiarity with software development methodologies, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with version control systems like Git, automated deployment tools, and possibly certifications such as AWS Certified Developer are valuable assets. Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for working independently and collaborating with remote or global teams. These skills ensure continuous system reliability, effective communication across shifts, and high-quality technical output during less traditional working hours.

Job description

Join us in building the future of finance.

Our mission is to democratize finance for all. An estimated $124 trillion of assets will be inherited by younger generations in the next two decades. The largest transfer of wealth in human history. If you’re ready to be at the epicenter of this historic cultural and financial shift, keep reading.

About the team + role

We are building an elite team, applying frontier technologies to the world’s biggest financial problems. We’re looking for bold thinkers. Sharp problem-solvers. Builders who are wired to make an impact. Robinhood isn’t a place for complacency, it’s where ambitious people do the best work of their careers. We’re a high-performing, fast-moving team with ethics at the center of everything we do. Expectations are high, and so are the rewards.

Robinhood is seeking a Software Engineer to join the Enterprise Build team: the small, high-leverage team that turns the company's best AI-built prototypes into true enterprise-grade services. Robinhood has gone all-in on an AI-accelerated workforce: every week, Hoodies across Finance, HR, Legal, Compliance, and beyond use sanctioned AI tools to build working prototypes of the tools they wish they had. The best of those ideas deserve to become real software. That is this team's entire job, and yours.

The team is built on the premise that AI multiplies what a senior engineer can own: agents do the first pass of assessment, porting, and scaffolding; you review, harden, and decide. The work is a distinctive loop. A prototype earns real usage in our experimental sandbox and arrives through a single front door. You assess it, decide what survives, often the idea and the workflow, rarely the code, and rebuild it as an enterprise-grade, production-spec service that meets our full engineering standards: SSO, audit logging, secrets management, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and security review, baked in from the first commit. While you build, you work directly with business partners, the forward-deployed pattern, pointed inward. Robinhood operates in a heavily regulated industry. Building fast here means building safely, and this team exists to help make sure those aren't in tension.

This role is based in our Menlo Park, CA office, with in-person attendance expected at least 3 days per week.

At Robinhood, we believe in the power of in-person work to accelerate progress, spark innovation, and strengthen community. Our office experience is intentional, energizing, and designed to fully support high-performing teams.

What You'll Do
  • Assess vibe-coded prototypes from across the company and make the technical call: harden, rebuild, or redirect, then own the outcome end-to-end.
  • Design, build, and ship services on Robinhood's enterprise platforms, meeting the company's full standards for secure, reliable enterprise software.
  • Build AI-natively: drive agents through first-pass assessment, porting, and test scaffolding, and ship MCP servers, sub-agents, and agent skills as production artifacts where the solution calls for them.
  • Work directly with sponsoring business units (Finance, HR, Legal, Compliance) during each build, translating real workflows into software people actually adopt.
  • Deliver clean operational handoffs as part of your definition of done: runbooks, evals, and dashboards.
  • Establish the paved patterns with the Enterprise Platforms team: when you solve the same problem twice, make it a platform capability the third time.
  • Raise the bar on AI-era engineering quality, including rigorous, teaching-quality review of AI-generated code, your own and others'.
What We're Looking For
  • 3+ years of software engineering experience building and running production backend or full-stack systems, with a track record of independently delivering high-ambiguity projects end-to-end.
  • Hands-on cloud depth, GCP preferred, including containerized services, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure as code, with a strong focus on a serverless stack.
  • Demonstrated AI-native development: daily fluency with agentic coding tools, experience building LLM-powered applications or agentic workflows, and the judgment to review, harden, and productionize AI-generated code.
  • Product sense and scoping discipline: you can find the 20% of a prototype worth keeping, say no to the rest, and finish, this team's leverage depends on engagements that end.
  • Exceptional communication with non-engineers: you're comfortable embedded with finance, legal, or HR partners, translating in both directions without losing precision.
  • Experience in highly regulated industries, particularly finance or fintech, is strongly preferred.
What we offer
  • Challenging, high-impact work to grow your career.
  • Performance-driven compensation with multipliers for outsized impact, bonus programs, equity ownership, and 401(k) matching.
  • Best-in-class benefits to fuel your work, including 100% paid health insurance for employees with 90% coverage for dependents.
  • Lifestyle wallet — a highly flexible benefits spending account for wellness, learning, and more.
  • Employer-paid life & disability insurance, fertility benefits, and mental health benefits.
  • Time off to recharge including company holidays, paid time off, sick time, parental leave, and more!
  • Exceptional office experience with catered meals, events, and comfortable workspaces.

In addition to the base pay range listed below, this role is also eligible for bonus opportunities + equity + benefits.

Base pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of job-related factors, which may include education, training, experience, location, business needs, or market demands. The expected base pay range for this role is based on the location where the work will be performed and is aligned to one of 3 compensation zones.
