What does a night shift robotics engineer localization do?

A Night Shift Robotics Engineer specializing in Localization is responsible for ensuring that robots can accurately determine their position and orientation within a given environment during overnight hours. This involves working with sensors, mapping algorithms, and navigation systems to help robots move and operate autonomously. Night shifts are often required in facilities that operate 24/7, such as warehouses, manufacturing plants, or research labs. The role also includes monitoring robotic systems, troubleshooting localization issues, and performing maintenance or updates as needed during off-peak hours.

What are some common challenges faced by night shift robotics engineer localization professionals, and how are they typically addressed?

Night Shift Robotics Engineer Localization professionals often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting localization errors in real-time with limited support staff available, maintaining high system uptime during off-peak hours, and ensuring seamless handovers with the day team. To address these, clear documentation practices, robust remote support protocols, and regular communication with cross-functional teams are essential. Additionally, night shift engineers often develop strong problem-solving skills and autonomy, which are highly valued for career advancement within robotics and automation fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a night shift robotics engineer localization, and why are they important?

A Night Shift Robotics Engineer in Localization requires strong proficiency in robotics systems, localization algorithms (such as SLAM), and a relevant engineering degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools like ROS (Robot Operating System), sensor fusion frameworks, and programming languages like Python or C++ is commonly expected. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently during off-hours are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure reliable robot operation, effective troubleshooting, and smooth system performance during night shifts when immediate team support may be limited.

What is the difference between Night Shift Robotics Engineer Localization vs Night Shift Robotics Engineer Perception?

AspectNight Shift Robotics Engineer LocalizationNight Shift Robotics Engineer Perception
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering; experience with localization algorithmsBachelor's in Robotics, Computer Vision, or related field; experience with perception systems
Work EnvironmentRobotics labs, manufacturing plants, or warehouse settings during night shiftsSimilar environments focusing on sensor data processing and object detection at night
Employer & Industry UsageAutonomous vehicle companies, logistics, and warehouse automationAutonomous vehicles, robotics research, and industrial automation

While both roles involve working with robotics during night shifts, Localization engineers focus on determining the robot's position within an environment, whereas Perception engineers work on interpreting sensor data to identify objects and surroundings. Both roles require similar technical backgrounds but differ in their core focus areas within robotics systems.

Job description

We are looking for a versatile, forward-thinkingย Mobile & Full-Stack Engineerย who loves bridging the gap between hardware, mobile platforms, and cloud infrastructure. You aren't just a mobile developer; you understand the entire app lifecycle, from DevOps pipelines to backend services.

We value strong engineering fundamentals in native technologies (Kotlin and Swift), but we are highly progressive-we embrace modern workflows, actively encourage the leverage ofย AI toolsย to speed up development, and are open-minded toward cross-platform ideas.

If you love deep-diving into Bluetooth/BLE protocols one day, deploying cloud functions the next, and utilizing cutting-edge AI to automate the boring stuff, we want to talk to you.

Responsibilities
  • Cross-Platform & Native Development:ย Design, build, and maintain high-performance applications for both iOS and Android, ensuring a seamless user experience.
  • Hardware Interfacing:ย Work deeply with Bluetooth/BLE technologies on mobile apps to interact securely and reliably with embedded devices.
  • Full-Stack & DevOps Ownership:ย Integrate and manage backends using Cloud (e.g. GCP, AWS...etc.) services. Own the app-related lifecycle, including CI/CD pipelines and deployment automated testing.
  • End-to-End Security:ย Implement robust security features, including user authentication, backend service authorization, and encrypted Over-The-Air (OTA) firmware upgrades.
  • AI-Driven Efficiency:ย Actively leverage AI development tools (e.g., Cursor, LLMs) to accelerate prototyping, code generation, debugging, and documentation.
  • API Crafting:ย Develop and optimize APIs to support robust mobile functionality.
  • Collaborate & Innovate:ย Partner with hardware teams and UI/UX designers to bring products from concept to the hands of users.

Requirements

  • Experience:ย 3+ years of professional mobile app development experience with a strong portfolio of shipped apps in the App Store and Google Play.
  • Language Mastery:ย Strong, foundational knowledge ofย Swiftย andย Kotlinย (Native Android/iOS development).
  • IoT/Wireless Tech:ย Proven experience working with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) APIs and hardware-to-mobile communication.
  • Cloud & Infrastructure:ย Hands-on experience withย Cloud (e.g. GCP, AWS...etc.) (or similar cloud ecosystems) for backend services.
  • Lifecycle & DevOps:ย Familiarity with the mobile deployment lifecycle, including App Store Connect, Google Play Console, and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Fastlane, Gitlab Runner...etc).
  • AI Tooling:ย Comfort and efficiency using AI-assisted coding tools to maximize output.
  • Core CS Fundamentals:ย Strong grasp of RESTful APIs, OOP design principles, application security, and clean architecture.
  • Bonus (Nice-to-have): Experience with, or a strong interest in,ย Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP)ย or other cross-platform strategies.

Benefits

  • Opportunities for participation in our Employee Options programs
  • 401K retirement plan
  • Excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Sick and Vacation time (Flex time for salary positions), and Paid Holidays
  • Massive Growth Opportunities and a long-term career
  • Casual and comfortable work environment
