Position Summary

The Assistant Mats Department Supervisor is responsible for assisting the Mats Department Supervisor with overseeing all night shift production activities while ensuring a safe, efficient, and quality-driven operation. This role provides daily leadership to production employees, supports scheduling and workflow coordination, monitors equipment performance, and ensures crane mats and industrial timber products are manufactured according to company specifications.

The ideal candidate is a hands‑on leader who can motivate employees, promote teamwork, and maintain production efficiency in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist the Mats Department Supervisor in managing all night shift production activities.
  • Supervise production employees while promoting a positive, safe, and productive work environment.
  • Ensure production schedules are achieved while meeting customer quality specifications.
  • Coordinate workflow between departments to maximize productivity and minimize downtime.
  • Monitor machinery and equipment performance and communicate maintenance needs promptly.
  • Assist with employee scheduling and ensure adequate staffing levels throughout the shift.
  • Train new employees on equipment operation, safety procedures, and company policies.
  • Coach and mentor team members to improve productivity and overall performance.
  • Conduct shift start‑up meetings covering production goals, safety expectations, and operational updates.
  • Verify all crane mats and timber products meet quality standards before shipment.
  • Complete production reports, downtime logs, quality documentation, and shift reports accurately.
  • Monitor employee attendance, productivity, and adherence to company policies.
  • Assist with employee evaluations, coaching, corrective actions, and performance improvement plans.
  • Work closely with Maintenance, Shipping, Sawmill, and Planer Mill personnel to ensure efficient production flow.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and increase productivity.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
Leadership Responsibilities
  • Lead employees by example while demonstrating professionalism and integrity.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Encourage employee development through coaching and hands‑on training.
  • Promote effective communication between day and night shift leadership.
  • Support company initiatives focused on safety, quality, and operational excellence.
Safety Responsibilities
  • Promote and enforce all OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
  • Ensure all employees are required to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Conduct routine safety observations and immediately correct unsafe conditions.
  • Report accidents, injuries, equipment damage, and near misses promptly.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas to reduce hazards.
  • Participate in incident investigations and implement corrective actions when necessary.
  • Ensure lockout/tagout (LOTO) and other safety procedures are always followed.
QualificationsRequired
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a sawmill, mats manufacturing, or industrial production environment.
  • Previous supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and production workflow.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and production reporting software.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read production schedules, measurements, and quality specifications.
Preferred
  • Previous experience in crane mat or timber manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of industrial lumber production processes.
  • OSHA safety training or equivalent manufacturing safety experience.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift (12‑Hour Shifts).
  • Ability to work holidays, weekends, and overtime as required.
  • Ability to lift to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Frequent bending, climbing, reaching, stooping, and walking.
  • Ability to safely work around forklifts, conveyors, saws, loaders, and heavy industrial equipment.
  • Ability to work in hot, cold, dusty, and noisy manufacturing environments.
  • Required to do other duties as assigned.
Work Environment

This position operates in a high‑production industrial manufacturing facility producing crane mats, hardwood timbers, and other forest products. Employees are exposed to wood dust, moving machinery, varying temperatures, loud equipment, and outdoor conditions. Strict adherence to all safety policies and PPE requirements is essential.
