Job Description
Position Summary:
The Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all aspects of production operations during their assigned shift, ensuring safety, efficiency, and quality in the coil coating process. This role leads a team of operators and technicians, manages production workflows, enforces compliance with SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and safety regulations, and optimizes machine uptime to meet production targets. The Shift Supervisor is the primary point of contact for troubleshooting production issues, coordinating with maintenance, and ensuring smooth shift transitions.
Key Responsibilities:
Production Supervision & Execution
  • Oversee direct shift operations, ensuring optimal performance of coating lines, curing ovens, tension levelers, and heavy equipment.
  • Monitor production schedules and machine load balancing to meet customer orders and minimize bottlenecks.
  • Ensure adherence to process parameters such as line speed, curing temperature, coating thickness, and quality standards.
  • Adjust process variables to maintain coating adhesion, color consistency, and defect-free output.

Workforce Management: Attendance, Timekeeping & Discipline
  • Track and manage employee attendance, absenteeism, and tardiness, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Approve, verify, and adjust timecards using ADP, ensuring accurate payroll processing.
  • Issue disciplinary actions as needed for attendance infractions, policy violations, or performance issues, following company protocols.
  • Maintain detailed records of verbal warnings, written warnings, and performance improvement plans (PIPs).
  • Conduct coaching and corrective action meetings to reinforce expectations and ensure compliance with company policies.
  • Ensure shift transitions are smooth and adequately staffed to prevent disruptions.

Safety & Compliance
  • Enforce LOTO (Lockout/Tagout), PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), and confined space entry procedures.
  • Ensure strict adherence to OSHA, environmental, and site-specific safety standards.
  • Conduct shift safety audits, address hazards, and report near misses/incidents.
  • Lead by example in promoting a safety-first culture among the production team.

Process Troubleshooting & Problem Solving
  • Identify and resolve equipment malfunctions, coating defects, and material flow disruptions.
  • Work closely with maintenance teams to schedule and coordinate repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Assist operators with diagnosing coating failures, curing inconsistencies, and mechanical issues.
  • Escalate major process deviations or unplanned downtime to Operations and Engineering teams.

Quality Control & Process Improvement
  • Conduct in-process inspections to verify color matching, coating adhesion, film thickness, and defect levels.
  • Ensure operators adhere to standard work procedures and quality control protocols.
  • Implement 5S, Lean Manufacturing, and Continuous Improvement initiatives.
  • Track and report key performance indicators (KPIs) such as scrap rate, yield, and throughput.

Shift Coordination & Reporting
  • Maintain accurate production logs, downtime tracking, and shift handover reports.
  • Communicate shift performance, ongoing issues, and action items to incoming supervisors.
  • Attend daily production meetings to align with Operations, Quality, and Maintenance teams.
  • Provide reports on attendance trends, disciplinary actions, and shift efficiency to upper management.

Working Conditions:
  • Works primarily on the production floor, requiring frequent interaction with machines and operators.
  • Exposure to high temperatures, chemical coatings, noise, and moving equipment.
  • Requires flexibility to work rotating shifts, weekends, and emergency coverage as needed.

Qualifications: Education/Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical certification or associate's degree in a relevant field preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of manufacturing experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of coating line operations, uncoilers, recoilers, and tension leveling.
  • Proficiency in reading production schedules, interpreting quality specs, and analyzing data.
  • Experience with timekeeping systems (ADP) for payroll and attendance tracking.
  • Knowledge of CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) for downtime tracking.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or Continuous Improvement principles is a plus.
