Remote Permanent Position

The Director, Data Engineering is a hands-on technology leader responsible for the strategy, architecture, development, and operational excellence of the organization's healthcare data platform. This role will lead the design, development, and optimization of scalable data pipelines and data products that support critical business operations, customer success initiatives, healthcare analytics, and executive decision-making.
This individual will be responsible for designing, building, and modifying data pipelines to support timely data ingestion, transformations, business logic processing, data validations, quality checks, trend analysis, KPI reporting, and real-time notifications to Customer Success and Operations teams.
The ideal candidate is a player-coach who combines deep technical expertise in Databricks, strong healthcare data domain knowledge, and proven leadership capabilities. This person must be equally comfortable developing solutions alongside engineers, collaborating with business stakeholders, and presenting to executive leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing Data Engineering team.
  • Establish engineering standards, development best practices, and operational procedures.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with Product, Operations, Customer Success, Analytics, and Executive Leadership teams to align data initiatives with business objectives.
  • Translate business requirements into scalable and sustainable technical solutions.

Hands-On Data Engineering & Architecture
  • Design, build, maintain, and optimize enterprise-scale data pipelines and data products.
  • Architect and implement Databricks Medallion Architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold) solutions.
  • Develop and support batch and real-time data ingestion pipelines.
  • Build scalable frameworks for:
    1. Data transformation
    2. Business rule execution
    3. Data validations
    4. Data quality monitoring
    5. Data observability
    6. Data lineage
    7. KPI and trend reporting
  • Develop and optimize solutions using Python, SQL, Databricks, Spark, and Delta Lake.
  • Establish and maintain data governance standards utilizing Unity Catalog.
  • Leverage Databricks Genie and AI-enabled capabilities to improve data accessibility and business insights.

Operational Excellence
  • Develop and maintain automated monitoring, alerting, and notification frameworks.
  • Implement proactive data quality and exception management processes.
  • Design real-time notifications and operational workflows supporting Customer Success and Operations teams.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and drive issue resolution for critical production incidents.
  • Ensure data platform reliability, scalability, security, and performance.

Business Partnership & Communication
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to business and executive leadership.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly and concisely to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely with Operations and Customer Success leaders to improve data quality, timeliness, and business outcomes.
  • Present data engineering strategy, platform health, and project progress to senior leadership.

Job Requirements
Required Qualifications
Leadership Experience
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in Data Engineering, Data Architecture, or related disciplines.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience managing and developing technical teams.
  • Proven experience building, mentoring, and leading high-performing engineering organizations.
  • Strong executive presence and stakeholder management skills.

Technical Expertise
  • Expert-level experience with Databricks.
  • Deep knowledge of Databricks Medallion Architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold).
  • Strong experience with Unity Catalog and data governance best practices.
  • Experience leveraging Databricks Genie and AI-driven analytics capabilities.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL.
  • Strong experience with Spark, Delta Lake, and Lakehouse architectures.
  • Experience designing and supporting both batch and real-time data processing solutions.
  • Strong expertise in ETL/ELT frameworks, data modeling, and data integration.
  • Experience implementing data quality, validation, monitoring, and observability frameworks.

Healthcare Data Experience (Required)
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience working with healthcare data platforms, healthcare analytics, or healthcare operations.
  • Deep understanding of healthcare data structures, business processes, and operational workflows.
  • Proven experience ingesting, transforming, validating, and operationalizing healthcare data assets.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    1. Enrollment and Eligibility Files
    2. Target Member Lists (TML)
    3. Gap in Care Files
    4. Pharmacy Claims Data
    5. MMR (Monthly Membership Report) Data
    6. Provider Data
    7. Member Demographic Data
  • Experience supporting Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, Population Health, Care Management, Quality Improvement, and Value-Based Care initiatives.
  • Familiarity with HEDIS measures, CMS reporting requirements, Risk Adjustment methodologies, and healthcare quality programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate healthcare business requirements into scalable data engineering solutions.

Hands-On Leadership
  • Proven success operating as a hands-on technical leader and player-coach.
  • Expected to actively participate in architecture design, solution development, code reviews, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.
  • Strong coding skills with the ability to personally develop and support production solutions when needed.
  • Experience leading by example through direct technical contribution and mentorship.
  • Comfortable balancing strategic leadership responsibilities with day-to-day technical execution.
  • Accurate and reliable reporting deliverables.
  • Reduced recurring production issues through root cause analysis.
  • Continuous improvement of reporting, support processes, and data quality.
