Job description

Job Title: Assistant Coach

Department: Hockey Operations

Location: Chicago / Blackhawks Ice Center (100% In-Office)

Status: Exempt

Reports to: Head Coach

Compensation: The annual budgeted salary for this position is $70,000-$85,000. Offers are made within this range and are based on relevant experience, skills, and qualifications.

Role Summary:

Take the next step in your hockey career with The Dopest Non-NHL Franchise in Hockey (Elite Prospects) as the Assistant Coach for the Chicago Steel, working with future NHL and NCAA talent. The successful candidate will perform all functions of a USHL Assistant Coach at all team practices, preseason training camp, preseason, regular season and playoff games, and the teams Rookie Weekend in May and camps in June. The individual should possess excellent communications skills, a strong sense of professionalism, expert understanding of the sport of hockey, and the ability and desire to work traditional and non-traditional hours including nights, weekends and holidays.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform all functions of a USHL Assistant Coach including on-ice coaching, player development, video sessions with individual players, scouting and video analysis of prospective recruits and opponents.
  • Work collaboratively with hockey operations staff to create best-in-class development environment for Steel players, promoting their advancement to the NCAA and beyond.
  • Attend all team practices, home and road games (and road trips) and select community events. This will include nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Other duties as assigned by Head Coach.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Multiple years of coaching experience at the USHL level or higher.
  • Strong leadership skills. A history of leadership roles (captain) is preferred.
  • Experience with hockey-specific, video coding software (Sportscode is preferred).
  • Willingness to be part of a large, collaborative group driven towards individual player development within a competitive team dynamic.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Positive, energetic, individual that is organized, communicates well, driven and open-minded.
  • Must have a creative hockey mind to bring ideas and innovate.
  • Must work well with large groups.
  • Possess an understanding that the job includes travel, long hours, and working nights and weekends.

The Team:

The Chicago Steel, members of the United States Hockey League (USHL) are one of the most decorated junior hockey teams in the world in recent years.

In September 2026, the Steel will begin their inaugural season at the brand new USG Arena inside the newly expanded Blackhawks Ice Center.

Since 2015, the Steel have won two Clark Cup Championships (2017 and 2021), two Anderson Cup Championships (regular season titles), and three conference championships. Since the inaugural 2000-2001 season, nearly 400 Chicago Steel players have played Division I hockey, and 63 Steel alumni have been selected in the NHL draft, including seven first-round selections.
