Job description

Metro Reporting Intern, Summer 2027

We're looking for a reporter to join our fast-paced, digitally focused metro team for 12 weeks in the summer of 2027. The intern will receive training and mentoring but also hit the ground running, covering a variety of stories. Areas of coverage could include city government and policy, neighborhood trends, transit, housing and breaking news. The ideal candidate will hustle, work quickly and compete to be first on stories. We need someone with high standards who can collaborate well, has excellent communication skills and is comfortable providing and taking feedback.

The internship offers numerous training opportunities, including brown bag lunches and mentoring from senior reporters and editors. Interns are also often assigned to help alongside seasoned reporters on some of the biggest breaking news events we cover.

The internship is paid at an hourly rate of $20.50/hr. Deadline to apply is October 10, 2026.

Requirements:

  • This position is full-time and will likely be a Monday-to-Friday schedule. Weekend, evening and holiday work may be required as news warrants.
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program.
  • Interns are expected to live in the Bay Area during the internship and work in our downtown San Francisco office at least three days a week.

Duties:

  • Report news for SFChronicle.com that may also publish in the Chronicle's print editions.
  • Work closely with editors and other reporters and collaborate with newsroom teams such as photo, video and data.
  • Compete to provide readers the timeliest and most authoritative information.

What we're looking for:

  • Overall: Someone eager to find and chase good stories, develop sources and work in a busy, demanding news environment. Strong writing skills are important, as is a strict dedication to accuracy and ethics. The candidate must be able to self-manage and handle tight deadlines.
  • Newsroom experience: We are looking for someone who has some newsroom experience; previous internships preferred, but not required.
