Job Summary

The Refinery Pipefitter/Welder is responsible for the fabrication, installation, repair, modification, and maintenance of piping systems and pressure-containing equipment in a petroleum refinery or industrial facility. This position requires proficiency in pipefitting, precision welding, blueprint interpretation, and safe work practices while working in operating units, maintenance outages, and capital projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, install, modify, repair, and maintain carbon steel, stainless steel, chrome alloy, and specialty alloy piping systems.
  • Read and interpret P&IDs, isometric drawings, fabrication drawings, spool sheets, and engineering specifications.
  • Lay out, measure, cut, bevel, fit, align, and assemble piping systems.
  • Perform field verification and accurately take measurements for fabrication.
  • Weld pipe using qualified procedures, including:
    • SMAW (Stick)
    • GTAW (TIG)
  • Produce high-quality welds that meet refinery standards and applicable ASME codes.
  • Prepare weld joints through proper fit-up, bevel preparation, alignment, and root spacing.
  • Install valves, blinds, flanges, gaskets, expansion joints, supports, and specialty piping components.
  • Perform flange management utilizing controlled bolting and torque procedures.
  • Install pipe supports, hangers, guides, anchors, and spring supports.
  • Assist with equipment setting and piping tie-ins.
  • Perform hot work safely under approved permits.
  • Participate in pressure testing, hydrostatic testing, pneumatic testing, and leak checks.
  • Work with Operations during equipment isolation, lockout/tagout, and startup activities.
  • Support turnaround (TAR) and outage activities.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with refinery specifications and quality requirements.
  • Maintain tools and work areas in a clean and organized condition.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong knowledge of refinery piping systems.
  • Understanding of ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code.
  • Ability to interpret piping specifications and weld procedures (WPS/PQR).
  • Experience with:
    • Pipe fabrication
    • Pipe alignment
    • Precision fit-up
    • Flange management
    • Hot taps and tie-ins (when qualified)
  • Knowledge of metallurgy and welding characteristics of various alloys.
  • Familiarity with:
    • Pressure vessels
    • Pumps
    • Boilers
    • Fired heaters
    • Storage tanks
    • Gate Valve, Globe Valves, PSV's, Ball Valves Etc.
  • Ability to use precision measuring instruments including:
    • Levels
    • Squares
    • Pipe wraps
    • Digital angle finders
  • Ability to safely rig and move piping using cranes, chain falls, come-alongs, and other lifting devices.

Safety Responsibilities

  • Follow all refinery safety policies and OSHA regulations.
  • Comply with:
    • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
    • Confined Space Entry
    • Hot Work
    • Line Breaking
    • Respiratory Protection
    • Fall Protection
  • Participate in Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Pre-Job Safety Meetings.
  • Identify hazards and stop unsafe work conditions.
  • Wear always required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain housekeeping standards throughout assigned work areas.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of an accredited Pipefitter/Welder apprenticeship, technical school, or equivalent experience.
  • Five or more years of industrial refinery, petrochemical, chemical plant, or heavy industrial pipefitting/welding experience.
  • Ability to pass refinery-required written and practical pipefitter & welding tests.
  • Current or previous welding qualifications in accordance with ASME Section IX preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain refinery access.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NCCER Pipefitter Certification.
  • NCCER Welding Certification.
  • AWS Certified Welder.
  • Experience in refinery turnarounds.
  • Experience welding:
    • Carbon Steel
    • Stainless Steel
    • Chrome-Moly
    • Duplex Stainless
    • Inconel or other nickel alloys
  • Forklift, aerial lift, and rigging certifications.

Physical Requirements

  • Lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Climb ladders, scaffolding, and structures.
  • Work in elevated locations.
  • Enter confined spaces.
  • Frequently bend, kneel, crawl, squat, and reach overhead.
  • Work in varying weather conditions and temperature extremes.
  • Wear required PPE including respirators and flame-resistant clothing.

Work Environment

Work is performed in an operating petroleum refinery with exposure to noise, vibration, heat, chemicals, moving equipment, elevated work areas, and confined spaces. Employees must work safely around energized systems, rotating equipment, and hazardous materials while maintaining productivity and quality standards.
