Job description

United States Steel Corporation has an immediate opening for a CTS Engineer in our Product Applications Engineering / Customer Technical Solutions Engineering organization in Automotive Solutions. This position serves a customer and processor territory in NW Indiana (Chicago area). The Customer Technical Service Engineer will provide the leadership needed to advocate for the customer and drive alignment with internal USS functions such that we meet or exceed our customers' expectations in the quality of our products and services. Position will require relocation and travel to trouble shoot problems at customers and processors in the immediate area. This is a position that requires a mid-career professional who can work remotely with minimal direct supervision.
Responsibilities include the following:
  • Proactively monitors quality performance of mill and competition at assigned customer/processor locations. Drives continuous improvement in product quality.
  • Single point of contact for United States Steel customer/processor.
  • Investigates and dispositions rejected material at customer locations; Communicates and contributes to new technical developments for customer and market; Reviews and approves customer specifications and requirements.
  • Familiarity with capabilities and limitations of producing mills and outside processors and can communicate this information to customers. Ensures accurate entry of customer requirements into mill orders; Accurately communicates problems to mills, processes and establishes containment; Drives root cause, implements corrective action and provides customer feedback.
  • Ensure results are documented in USS Dispomatic/SteelTrack system, following established policies.
  • Utilizes knowledge, skills, and influence to facilitate breakthrough performance across the organization. 
  • Document results in claim system, following established claim policies.
  • Report directed operational, metrics-based benchmarking to identify and share best practices.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgy, Material Science, Mechanical or related engineering field or equivalent experience'
  • Requires at least 8 years of quality related experience in the automotive industry, with experience in structured problem solving, and proactive quality resolution.
  • Desire at least five years of related experience with flat roll products in quality or operating capacity or an equivalent combination of education and experience which includes extensive sheet processing/product knowledge;
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 30% within customer territory, local residence is preferred.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of quality tools such as Six Sigma, 8D, 5Y, Shainin Strategies
  • Experienced engineer with knowledge of tooling, forming and material quality to be used as a technical resource in customer plant issues;
  • Understanding of mill product quality standards, capabilities and limitations
  • Familiarity with ASTM and JIS industry standards
  • Sheet mill process/product experience preferred
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with a strong focus on continuous improvement, cost avoidance and a sense of urgency.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, maintaining a persuasive and credible presentation style at all levels of the organization.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams on projects leveraging PDCA and DMAIC methodologies preferred.
  • Ability to work remotely with little direct supervision.

As an individual contributor, qualified candidates for this role also must demonstrate the ability to champion change and effective communication while contributing to team success. Individual must understand U.S. Steel critical systems, navigate and utilize them effectively. Individual will be well versed in the steel industry and understand what it takes to properly service customers and will be able to generate professional presentations suitable for high level customer/processor use. This individual needs to be comfortable giving presentations to various groups and can handle difficult conversations with customers/processors where emotions could potentially be elevated.
