What are New Grad Data Scientists?

New Grad Data Scientists are recent graduates who have completed a degree in a related field such as computer science, statistics, mathematics, or engineering, and have started their careers in data science. They apply statistical analysis, machine learning, and data visualization techniques to help organizations make data-driven decisions. Typically, new grads in these roles work closely with experienced data scientists, learning best practices and gaining practical experience while contributing to real-world projects. Employers generally expect them to have experience with programming languages like Python or R, and familiarity with data analysis tools and concepts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a New Grad Data Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a New Grad Data Scientist, you need a solid background in statistics, mathematics, and programming—typically with a degree in a relevant field such as computer science or data science. Familiarity with tools and languages like Python, R, SQL, and experience with machine learning frameworks or data visualization platforms is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, curiosity, and effective communication skills help you interpret data and convey insights to stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for transforming data into actionable business solutions and contributing to data-driven decision-making.

What are some common challenges new grad data scientists face when transitioning from academia to industry?

New grad data scientists often find that real-world data is messier and less structured than academic datasets, requiring strong data cleaning and wrangling skills. Additionally, they may need to adapt to working within cross-functional teams, collaborating closely with engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders to align their analyses with organizational goals. Prioritizing impactful projects under tight deadlines and communicating complex findings in a clear, actionable manner are also key challenges. Building these practical skills early can significantly accelerate both learning and career advancement.

What is the difference between New Grad Data Scientist vs Data Analyst?

Active TS/SCI with Poly Clearance required

@Orchard is retained by a top geospatial technology company supporting important operations missions to U.S. Government customers. Our client is forging the new frontier of spatial intelligence, helping decision makers and operators navigate what’s happening now and shape what’s coming next. They are a place for problem solvers, changemakers, and go-getters—where people are working together to help our customers see the world differently, and in doing so, be seen differently. Come be part of a mission, not just a job, where you can: Shape your own future, build the next big thing, and change the world.

We're hiring multiple Data Scientists to join our team. In this position you will use your expertise to support the research, development, and implementation of advanced analytical methodologies and techniques that leverage artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science approaches. Data Scientists will support a forward-leaning defense intelligence program focused on enhancing analytic rigor, efficiency, and predictive capability across a broad mission set. This includes support to Object-Based Intelligence (OBI) production, structured analytic method augmentation, and automation of analytic workflows. Data Scientists will collaborate with analysts, methodologists, and technologists to research, develop, and implement advanced methodologies that leverage artificial intelligence, machine learning, and statistical modeling to solve complex intelligence problems.

To be eligible for this position, you must be a U.S. Citizen, and hold an active U.S. Government Security Clearance at the TS/SCI level with in-scope CI Polygraph.

Responsibilities:

  • Work in tandem with analysts to figure out methods to solve their challenges with complex data sets, pattern identification, and visualizations.
  • Perform research and implement forward-looking analytic methodologies that leverage statistical techniques and pattern recognition.
  • Assist analysts in developing structured approaches to predictive intelligence that increase timeliness and accuracy of assessments.
  • Expand existing Natural Language Processing (NLP) to include new entities and improved visualization.
  • Research and implement approaches that enhance analytical tradecraft (support critical thinking, mitigate biases, increase analytic rigor).
  • Research and implement advanced analytic methodologies that enhance tradecraft, mitigate bias, and improve analytic efficiency.
  • Support the automation of structured analytic methods and workflows to increase repeatability and scalability of intelligence production.
  • Contribute to the development and integration of semantic technologies, including ontologies and knowledge graphs, to support OBI standards.
  • Design and build visualizations and dashboards that communicate complex data insights to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Evaluate and optimize analytic performance using qualitative and quantitative metrics.

Minimum Qualifications:
