New Grad Ai Software Engineer information

What does a new grad AI software engineer do?

A New Grad AI Software Engineer is an entry-level professional who designs, develops, and tests artificial intelligence systems and applications. They often work with machine learning models, data processing, and software development tools to build intelligent solutions. Their responsibilities may include coding, debugging, collaborating with senior engineers, and staying updated on the latest AI techniques. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and opportunities to contribute to innovative AI projects while learning from experienced colleagues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a new grad AI software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a New Grad AI Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science fundamentals, programming (Python, Java, or C++), and a solid understanding of machine learning concepts, often supported by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch, experience with data processing tools, and knowledge of cloud platforms like AWS or Azure are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, a willingness to learn, and effective teamwork and communication skills help new grads stand out. These skills and qualities enable engineers to contribute to complex AI projects, adapt to evolving technologies, and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by new grad AI software engineers in their first year on the job?

New grad AI Software Engineers often face the challenge of bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application. Adapting to large, production-level codebases, collaborating effectively within cross-functional teams, and learning to balance experimentation with delivery timelines are common hurdles. Additionally, keeping up with rapidly evolving AI technologies while mastering company-specific tools and workflows can be demanding. However, mentorship programs and regular code reviews are typically in place to support new grads as they grow into their role.

What is the difference between New Grad Ai Software Engineer vs Ai Software Engineer?

AspectNew Grad Ai Software EngineerAi Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in CS, AI, or related field; internship experience preferredBachelor's or Master's degree; 1+ years experience often required
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, collaborative teams, mentorship programsMid-level to senior teams, more independent responsibilities
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, startups, research labs hiring new graduatesEstablished companies, industry projects, ongoing AI development

The main difference between a New Grad Ai Software Engineer and an Ai Software Engineer is experience level. The new graduate role is designed for recent graduates with limited professional experience, focusing on learning and growth. In contrast, an Ai Software Engineer typically has more experience, handling complex projects independently. Both roles require a strong foundation in AI and software development, but the level of responsibility and independence increases with experience.

About the Role

Our client is a global technology leader developing next-generation AI and machine learning solutions for mobile, automotive, IoT, and edge computing applications.

We are looking for a Machine Learning / AI Software Engineer to join a highly technical team focused on building high-performance, on-device AI software. In this role, you’ll work across the AI software stack, developing and optimizing software that enables neural networks to run efficiently on specialized hardware.

This is an opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI technology, collaborating closely with software, hardware, architecture, and customer teams to deliver production-quality solutions.

What You’ll Do
  • Develop and optimize software for AI and machine learning workloads running on specialized hardware.
  • Design and implement optimization algorithms for ML operators and neural network layers.
  • Enhance AI software frameworks to improve performance and resource utilization.
  • Develop profiling, debugging, and developer tools to accelerate deployment of new neural network models.
  • Evaluate and optimize neural network runtime performance, efficiency, and accuracy.
  • Enable new AI models and software features based on customer requirements and use cases.
  • Work closely with hardware and architecture teams to improve overall AI performance and capabilities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to deliver cohesive, production-ready solutions.
  • Contribute to software quality, development processes, and commercial product releases.
  • Help drive technical ideas from concept through implementation and deployment.
What You’ll Bring
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, ideally in AI/ML, embedded systems, or performance optimization.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline; Master's or PhD is an asset.
  • Strong C++ programming skills and experience developing production software.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, debugging, and software development skills.
  • Experience with Python and NumPy.
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • Experience developing software for Android or embedded Linux is an asset.
  • Experience optimizing algorithms for hardware acceleration, using technologies such as OpenCL, OpenGL ES, DSPs, or similar architectures.
  • Strong understanding of mathematical and computational concepts including:
    • Linear algebra
    • Fast math libraries
    • Multithreading
    • Vectorization and SIMD instruction sets
  • Ability to work effectively across large, globally distributed engineering teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to learn and tackle complex technical problems.
Why This Role?

You’ll have the opportunity to work on high-performance AI software at the edge, solving challenging problems at the intersection of machine learning, software, and hardware. Your work will directly contribute to the deployment of advanced AI capabilities across next-generation connected devices and platforms.
