How much do neutronics jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 27, 2026, the average yearly pay for neutronics in the United States is $154,474.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $146,000.00 and $161,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Neutronics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Neutronics Engineer, you need a solid background in nuclear engineering, physics, and mathematics, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with reactor physics codes (such as MCNP or SCALE), simulation software, and sometimes a Professional Engineer (PE) license are often required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for effectively interpreting complex data and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure the safe, efficient, and accurate modeling of nuclear systems, which is essential for reactor design, operation, and regulatory compliance.

What are neutronics?

Neutronics is the study of the behavior and movement of neutrons within nuclear reactors or other systems where nuclear reactions occur. It involves analyzing how neutrons interact with materials, how they are absorbed or scattered, and how their distribution affects the operation and safety of a nuclear reactor. Neutronics specialists use mathematical models and simulations to optimize reactor design, ensure efficient fuel usage, and maintain safety standards. This field is essential for the effective and safe generation of nuclear energy.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in neutronics, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in neutronics often encounter challenges such as accurately modeling complex nuclear systems, managing large datasets, and ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols. These challenges can be addressed by staying updated with the latest simulation tools, collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams (such as nuclear engineers and safety analysts), and participating in ongoing training. Additionally, effective communication and documentation are essential for ensuring that results are clearly understood and can be acted upon by both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What is the difference between Neutronics vs Radiation Protection Specialist?

AspectNeutronicsRadiation Protection Specialist
Required CredentialsDegree in nuclear engineering, certifications like NEUP or NEETDegree in health physics, certifications like CHP or RC
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, nuclear power plants, simulation centersField sites, hospitals, nuclear facilities
Industry UsageDesigning reactor cores, neutron transport analysisMonitoring radiation exposure, safety compliance

Neutronics focuses on neutron behavior and reactor design, while Radiation Protection Specialists concentrate on safety and exposure management. Both roles require nuclear-related credentials and often work within the nuclear industry, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ significantly.

Job description

As the need for nuclear energy grows, the future couldn’t be brighter. Join our vital mission to create lasting solutions for our planet’s greatest challenges. In this role, you are ready to shape the future of clean energy and make a long-lasting global impact. With us, anticipate engaging and challenging projects that deliver innovative solutions and value-added technologies helping power more than 38 million North American homes.

  • Creating cross sections of various fuel assembly lattice designs to support one of the many light water reactors that Framatome is the fuel vendor for.
  • Designing new and shuffling old fuel assemblies in a pattern that leads to optimal energy requirements while maintaining safety parameters.
  • Calculating neutronics parameters, providing inputs for downstream analyses, and documenting the analyzed results.
  • Propose solutions and work scope to supervisor, works autonomously on most assignments and solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with government regulations, organization, industry and customer engineering standards.
  • Independently evaluate, select and apply a variety of technical techniques, procedures, and criteria using judgement in making more complex adaptations and modifications for tasks not previously performed.
  • Develop new or adapted products, methods, systems or models to provide added value solutions to customers.
  • Understand impact of work on other organizations internally and externally.
  • Work on special projects, as directed.
  • Provide suggestions for improving processes and implementing process improvements.

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with light water reactors and have performed multiple core designs in your career
  • Knowledge on how to control core physics parameters based on varying fuel assembly enrichment and poison
  • Display positive and effective team interaction skills and value positive peer relationships
  • Customer focus and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with a passion for problem solving

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. Dependent on the position, degrees in Physics, Engineering Technology and Engineering Science may also be accepted.
  • Minimum of 7 years of related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of related engineering standards, techniques and criteria.
  • Excellent communication skills to comprehend and convey detailed technical data.
  • Grows developed network and maintains good interpersonal relationships; work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Advanced problem identification and problem resolution skills.
  • Displays leadership characteristics.
  • Exhibits questioning attitude and practices self-checking.
  • Advanced proficiency with specialized software tools and programming languages as required by the role.

  • Salary: $115,000 - $156,000 and may also include annual incentives and performance bonuses. The base salary range is a guideline. Individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies and work location.
