What jobs are in computer networking?

Network jobs refer to roles that involve the design, implementation, management, and troubleshooting of computer networks. These positions can include network administrators, network engineers, and network technicians, who are responsible for ensuring the smooth operation and security of data communication systems within organizations. Network jobs are essential for maintaining connectivity, supporting communication, and enabling the sharing of resources such as files and internet access across computers and devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Engineer, you need strong knowledge of networking protocols, infrastructure design, troubleshooting, and a relevant degree or certification such as CCNA or CompTIA Network+. Familiarity with network hardware, firewalls, routers, switches, and management tools like Wireshark or SolarWinds is typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for diagnosing issues and collaborating with IT teams. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring network reliability, security, and optimal performance in modern organizations.

What is the difference between a network engineer and a network administrator?

A network engineer is responsible for designing and building a network, as well as for acquiring and locating required physical components. A network administrator is responsible for the daily functionality of the network, ensuring reliability and data security. Admins create and remove users and group permissions, following best practices for network security. Both jobs require specialized technical knowledge and coordination with stakeholders throughout the organization.

What are some typical challenges faced by network engineers in maintaining network security, and how can they be addressed?

Network engineers often encounter challenges such as managing vulnerabilities from outdated hardware or software, mitigating the risks of unauthorized access, and responding to evolving cyber threats. To address these issues, engineers regularly update and patch systems, implement robust firewalls, and use intrusion detection systems. Collaborating closely with the IT security team and staying current with industry best practices are also essential strategies for maintaining a secure and resilient network environment.

What is the difference between Network vs Network Administrator?

AspectNetworkNetwork Administrator
CertificationsCCNA, CompTIA Network+CCNA, CompTIA Network+, Cisco certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning, planning, and implementing networksManaging, maintaining, and troubleshooting networks
Job ResponsibilitiesNetwork architecture, hardware setupNetwork monitoring, user support, security
Industry UsageUsed broadly in network design and planningCommonly employed in daily network management

While both roles involve working with networks, a 'Network' professional typically focuses on designing and planning network infrastructure, whereas a 'Network Administrator' manages and maintains existing networks. The Network role is more strategic, while the Network Administrator handles operational tasks to ensure network stability and security.

What careers are there in networking?

Careers in networking include roles such as network administrator, network engineer, systems analyst, and cybersecurity specialist. These positions involve managing, designing, and securing computer networks, often requiring knowledge of protocols, hardware, and certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+.

What do you do in a network job?

A network job typically involves designing, implementing, managing, and troubleshooting computer networks to ensure reliable data communication. Professionals in this field configure hardware and software, monitor network performance, and maintain security protocols, often using tools like routers, switches, and network management software. Certifications such as Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+ are common for these roles.

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

Blue Origin is pioneering the future of space-based communications with TeraWave, a revolutionary satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This multi-orbit constellation will consist of optically interconnected satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO), providing enterprise-grade connectivity for critical operations worldwide.

As a Principal Technical Program Manager within the TeraWave Network Software organization, you will lead program execution across the teams building the constellation's end-to-end network software stack, including Software-Defined Networking, Points of Presence, network platform, and wireless MAC software.

You will own the integrated network software roadmap and execution plan, establish scalable planning and delivery mechanisms, and drive alignment across software, silicon, hardware, systems engineering, integration, and operational partners. You will work closely with engineering leaders and technical teams to identify critical-path dependencies, resolve ambiguity, manage program risk, and deliver major system capabilities.

This role is based in Seattle, WA, or Cupertino, CA.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the integrated roadmap and execution plan across the SDN, PoP, network platform, and wireless MAC software teams.

  • Establish, run, and continuously improve the sprint planning and execution mechanisms used across the Network Software organization, including milestone reviews, dependency management, risk tracking, and delivery reporting.

  • Develop and maintain a six-month rolling roadmap that translates system architecture, product priorities, and constellation milestones into sequenced software deliverables.

  • Coordinate technical deliverables, interfaces, integration dependencies, and readiness criteria across software, silicon, hardware, systems engineering, test, and operational teams.

  • Identify critical-path items and systemic program risks, establish mitigation plans, and drive decisions or escalations to closure.

  • Lead cross-functional planning for major integration, test, deployment, and operational-readiness milestones.

  • Define and track program metrics that provide clear insight into delivery health, dependency status, schedule confidence, and organizational risk.

  • Communicate program status, tradeoffs, risks, and recommended actions to engineering leadership and senior stakeholders.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related STEM field.

  • 10 or more years of technical program management or equivalent program leadership experience working with software engineering organizations.

  • Experience leading complex, multi-team software programs from planning through integration, release, and operational deployment.

  • Experience developing and managing integrated roadmaps, milestones, dependencies, risks, and critical paths.

  • Experience coordinating software delivery with hardware, silicon, embedded systems, or other tightly coupled engineering organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related STEM field.

  • Experience delivering networking, telecommunications, aerospace, embedded systems, or large-scale distributed-system programs.

  • Experience managing programs that span cloud software, embedded software, networking hardware, and operational infrastructure.

  • Familiarity with networking concepts such as routing, switching, wireless systems, Software-Defined Networking, or network management and orchestration.

  • Experience using tools such as Jira and Confluence to support planning, dependency management, and organizational reporting.

  • Experience operating in a fast-paced development environmentwith evolving requirements and aggressive delivery timelines.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence technical teams, engineering leaders, and cross-functional stakeholders without direct authority.
