Job description

Uniserve, an industry-leading provider of managed IT services and cabling is growing! With over 25 years of experience in the industry, we provide reliable, trusted and long-term IT solutions to businesses of all sizes, including full-service installations for cabling, servers, security systems and more. We have an immediate need for Cabling Technicians to perform various functions such as the installation of commercial network and low voltage infrastructure wiring, as well as the testing and troubleshooting of wiring problems.

Job Description:

  • Undertake the installation of data equipment, including data racks, patch panels, cable trays, etc.
  • Utilize appropriate testing equipment to test installed cables
  • Provide documentation of all information on all cable and equipment
  • Improve upon existing installation and troubleshooting procedures
  • Perform cabling installations, including New Commercial Data, Voice, Fiber Optic and Paging
  • Drive a company vehicle and operate a variety of tools, such as hand tools, power tools, ladders, scissor lifts and test equipment
  • Test systems and perform signal verification
  • Adhere to safety policies and procedures and report all accidents, hazards and equipment problems
  • Take responsibility for installing cables in new or existing buildings
  • Perform termination and testing of new cabling
  • Responsible for setting up new telecommunications frames
  • Install Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6e and fiber optic cabling systems
  • Label, pull and terminate cable.
  • Perform maintenance on cable systems by installing, repairing, programming and upgrading cable infrastructure
  • Apply established procedures in testing every newly installed or relocated cable
  • Keep cable neatly tied and bundled while maintaining safety standards
  • Document time and materials expended on work assignments daily
  • Complete required paperwork, such as installation checklists, timesheets, service orders, vehicle inspection reports and various other logs as required
  • Promote environmental, health and safety policies within the workplace
  • Perform installation and routine maintenance of structured cabling systems
  • Work at heights (including ladders, poles, rooftops) and may need to enter small confined spaces

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of structured cabling and other advanced technologies
  • A high level of manual dexterity
  • Knowledge of labelling, pulling and dressing category 3, category 5e, category 6 and fibre optic. Previous wiring or data experience (Audio Installer, Network Installer, Cable Installer, etc.) is required
  • Knowledgeable in various wiring configurations and terminations, as well as possess technical skills and knowledge of telecommunications industry and installations, including voice, data and video-structured cabling systems
  • A strong working knowledge of TIA, EIA, BICSI or NEC Standards, including installation, troubleshooting and service. Working knowledge of building codes, electrical codes, communication standards and installation beneficial
  • Fully equipped with tools for the job
  • High School Diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Solid written and verbal communications skills for documentation, report writing and rapport building
  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a professional team
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks effectively and complete them in good time applying planning and forward-thinking skills
  • Must be service oriented and capable of relationship building
  • Must be able to perform basic math functions
  • Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and be bondable
