Job Description:
This position with the ITS/UNI Network Engineering team. This position is responsible for designing, implementing, administrating and monitoring a complex network infrastructure comprised of equipment such as routers, switches, firewalls, VPN appliances, network controllers, and various other appliances that support LSU's faculty, staff, and student population. This position will act as a subject matter expert for networking and be expected to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve complex network and security issues. Mentoring of junior analysts, student employees, and other employees at UNI will also be expected.
Job Responsibilities:
Engineer 1-
Design: Assists in the design and implementation of network services and infrastructure that support business and academic needs. Works with engineers, analysts, customers, and other stakeholders to gather requirements and support the development of network solutions. Collaborates with the IT Security Policy group to implement network security controls and standards. Assists in building lab and test environments to simulate and validate network configurations. Prepares and maintains basic technical documentation, including network diagrams, configurations, and implementation details. Works under the guidance of senior engineers to develop technical knowledge of networking technologies, tools, and best practices. (30%)
Operations: Assists with the configuration, installation, maintenance, and support of network security hardware and software, including switches, routers, and firewalls. Monitors network performance, availability, and reliability using established tools and processes. Applies foundational networking principles and established procedures to troubleshoot and resolve routine network issues. Performs site surveys, data collection, and technical preparation activities for network infrastructure projects. Supports routine updates to firewall policies and switch access control lists (ACLs) as directed by senior engineers or the IT Security team. (30%)
Support: Provides technical support for network-related issues and responds to alerts generated by monitoring systems. Escalates complex issues to senior engineers or appropriate teams for resolution. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with customers, engineers, analysts, and other LSU stakeholders. Assists in the development and maintenance of technical and support documentation for internal use. Works collaboratively within a team environment to support reliable and secure network services while continuing to build technical skills and knowledge. (30%)

Engineer 2-
Design: Participates in the design and implementation of enterprise network security solutions that support business and academic needs. Works with engineers, analysts, customers, and other stakeholders to gather and analyze requirements and contribute to the development of secure and scalable network designs. Collaborates with senior engineers and the IT Security Policy group to implement network security controls and standards. Assists in evaluating technologies and provides input and recommendations for network solutions in alignment with established architectural standards. Builds and supports lab and test environments to validate and optimize network configurations. Develops and maintains detailed technical documentation, including network diagrams and implementation plans. (35%)
Operations: D Configures, deploys, and supports network security infrastructure across a distributed environment. Monitors network performance, capacity, and reliability, and identifies and resolves issues, including more complex problems, using established tools and processes. Applies advanced networking principles and protocols-including routing, switching, and security-to troubleshoot and resolve issues. Supports technologies such as firewalls, NAC, AAA, IPAM, and dynamic routing protocols. Assists with automation efforts and uses tools and scripting to improve operational efficiency and consistency. Supports network segmentation, including Layer 2 and Layer 3 environments such as VRFs and VXLAN/EVPN. (30%)
Support: Resolves network issues and serves as an escalation resource for Engineer I staff, working with senior engineers as needed to restore services. Participates in incident response and problem resolution activities. Collaborates with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to support reliable network services. Provides guidance and knowledge sharing to junior staff. Participates in change management processes to ensure changes are planned, tested, and implemented appropriately. Maintains accurate technical documentation and ensures the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive network and institutional information. (25%)

Minimum Qualifications:
Engineer 1-
Bachelor's degree with 1 year of experience.
Demonstrates a basic understanding of network protocols including Ethernet, TCP/IP, spanning tree, DHCP, DNS, ARP, IPsec, static routing, SNMP, NAT, NTP, 802.1q, etc in order to configure and troubleshoot Ethernet switches and security appliances. Understands the difference between types of cables and how they relate to other aspects of a network. Coordinates the plans for and deployment of smaller projects as assigned. This includes collaboration, notifications, change management, etc.
Engineer 2-
Bachelor's degree with 2 years experience.
Demonstrates a proficient understanding of control plan policing, network virtualization, high
availability, PKI, remote access technologies, IDS/IPS. Corrects more advanced network health as well as security-related issues independently or as reported by junior analysts or other team.
Assists advanced engineers with product evaluations and conducts independent evaluations of
more basic equipment.
