Network Server information

What is a network server?

A network server is a powerful computer or device that manages network resources and provides services to other computers, known as clients, on the same network. Network servers can handle tasks such as storing files, managing printers, hosting websites, or running applications. They are essential for organizations to share data, facilitate communication, and ensure security across a network. Properly configured and maintained servers help businesses operate more efficiently and securely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network server administrator?

To thrive as a Network Server Administrator, you need a solid understanding of server operating systems, network protocols, and security principles, typically supported by a degree in information technology or related certifications. Familiarity with tools like Windows Server, Linux, virtualization platforms, and monitoring systems such as Nagios or SolarWinds is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help administrators manage incidents and coordinate with IT teams. These skills ensure reliable network uptime, security, and efficient troubleshooting, which are critical for organizational productivity.

What are some common challenges faced by network server administrators, and how can they prepare for them?

Network Server administrators often encounter challenges such as unexpected server outages, security threats, and the need to maintain high uptime. To prepare, it's essential to develop strong troubleshooting skills, stay updated on the latest security practices, and implement reliable backup and monitoring solutions. Regularly participating in training and collaborating closely with IT support and cybersecurity teams can help address these challenges efficiently while minimizing downtime and data loss.

Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job focus within IT infrastructure.

Is networking a high paying job?

Network server roles are generally considered well-paying within the IT industry, with salaries often reflecting experience, certifications, and location. Professionals with skills in network management, security, and troubleshooting can earn competitive wages, especially with certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+.

Job description

Senior Software Engineer (VoIP)

We're building the tools that help local businesses connect, grow, and win.

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer who thinks like a product owner, someone who's scrappy, opinionated, and energized by taking something from zero to one, with expertise in building VoIP solutions. In this role, you will join a team of intelligent and dedicated engineers tasked with empowering local businesses by creating a modern phone service for collecting and converting leads for local businesses through AI agents. You care more about what ships than what stack you're shipping on, and you use AI tooling (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) as a genuine force multiplier, not a novelty.

What you'll do

You'll own features end-to-end, from the first design conversation to production, on a platform thousands of businesses rely on every day. You'll influence architecture, collaborate closely with product and design, and help keep our VoIP systems reliable as we scale. You'll also invest in the people around you: sharing knowledge, reviewing code, and raising the team's collective ceiling.

What you should have

  • 6+ years building and shipping production systems
  • A track record of owning problems end-to-end, not just executing tickets, but defining and delivering.
  • Experience identifying and resolving bottlenecks and performance issues within our VoIP infrastructure
  • Experience with VoIP platforms like FreeSwitch, Kamailio, OpenSIPS, Asterisk
  • A hands-on, daily relationship with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, etc.) - you've figured out how to move meaningfully faster with them.

What we hope you have

  • Experience at a fast-moving startup or SaaS company.
  • Familiarity with distributed systems concepts: queues, event-driven architecture, horizontal scaling.
  • Hands-on experience with network monitoring, network diagnostics, and network analytics tools.
  • WebRTC experience: SDP negotiation, ICE/STUN/TURN, browser and mobile softphones
  • Proficient in packet capture utilities and identifying application issues at the packet level.
  • Experience in network, server, and application-status monitoring.
Why you'll love working here:
  • Podium is the best place to work to:
    • Join the leaders in AI agents
    • Unlock career-defining growth
    • Build with world-class talent
    • Make a real impact on local business
Benefits:
  • Open and transparent culture
  • Life insurance, long and short-term disability coverage
  • Paid maternity and paternity leave
  • Fertility Benefits
  • Generous vacation time, plus three 4-day summer holiday weekends
  • Excellent medical, dental, and vision benefits
  • 401k Plan with company matching
  • Bi-annual swag drops with cool Podium gear and apparel
  • A stellar HQ (Utah) gym with local professional coaches and classes offered
  • Onsite HQ (Utah) child care center, subsidized for employees
