Network Server information

What is a network server?

A network server is a powerful computer or device that manages network resources and provides services to other computers, known as clients, on the same network. Network servers can handle tasks such as storing files, managing printers, hosting websites, or running applications. They are essential for organizations to share data, facilitate communication, and ensure security across a network. Properly configured and maintained servers help businesses operate more efficiently and securely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network server administrator?

To thrive as a Network Server Administrator, you need a solid understanding of server operating systems, network protocols, and security principles, typically supported by a degree in information technology or related certifications. Familiarity with tools like Windows Server, Linux, virtualization platforms, and monitoring systems such as Nagios or SolarWinds is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help administrators manage incidents and coordinate with IT teams. These skills ensure reliable network uptime, security, and efficient troubleshooting, which are critical for organizational productivity.

What are some common challenges faced by network server administrators, and how can they prepare for them?

Network Server administrators often encounter challenges such as unexpected server outages, security threats, and the need to maintain high uptime. To prepare, it's essential to develop strong troubleshooting skills, stay updated on the latest security practices, and implement reliable backup and monitoring solutions. Regularly participating in training and collaborating closely with IT support and cybersecurity teams can help address these challenges efficiently while minimizing downtime and data loss.

Is networking a high paying job?

Network server roles are generally considered well-paying within the IT industry, with salaries often reflecting experience, certifications, and location. Professionals with skills in network management, security, and troubleshooting can earn competitive wages, especially with certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+.

Job description

Who we are

Intega IT is a boutique IT security and support firm focused on helping organizations operate securely, efficiently, and with confidence. Since 2001, we’ve partnered with businesses throughout the Ottawa community, earning trust through consistent delivery, personalized service, and a relentless commitment to protecting and empowering our clients.

About the Role

Intega is seeking a Senior Network / Infrastructure Engineer to provide advanced technical expertise, implementation leadership, and design support across customer network and infrastructure environments.

This role bridges the gap between delivery‑focused engineering and architecture authority. You will lead complex implementations, act as a senior escalation point, contribute to standards and designs, and mentor other engineers—while still remaining hands‑on.

Key Responsibilities

Advanced Engineering & Technical Escalation

  • Serve as senior escalation for complex network, server, and infrastructure issues
  • Design and implement advanced solutions involving routing, switching, firewalls, VPNs, wireless, and server infrastructure
  • Lead resolution of high‑impact, multi‑system incidents and recurring problems

Server & Infrastructure Engineering

  • Design and administer advanced Windows Server environments, including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and core infrastructure services
  • Lead virtualization implementations and optimization across VMware, Hyper‑V, and hybrid platforms
  • Plan and execute server upgrades, migrations, and lifecycle refresh activities
  • Validate backup, recovery, and disaster‑recovery configurations for server workloads

Solution Design & Standards Contribution

  • Produce solution designs and implementation plans for moderate to high‑complexity changes and projects
  • Ensure solutions align with architectural standards and security requirements
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of infrastructure standards and reference designs

Change Execution & Delivery Leadership

  • Lead infrastructure changes with appropriate risk assessment, testing, and documentation
  • Act as technical lead on infrastructure‑heavy projects
  • Coordinate closely with NOC, Security, M365, and Project teams to ensure clean delivery and handoff

Mentorship & Technical Leadership

  • Mentor Network / Infrastructure Administrators
  • Provide guidance on troubleshooting approaches, design considerations, and best practices
  • Raise quality and consistency across delivery of infrastructure and networking projects

Core Skills & Competencies

Technical Skills

  • Advanced routing, switching, VLANs, and network troubleshooting
  • Firewall architecture, policy management, and secure segmentation
  • Site‑to‑site and remote access VPN design
  • Design and performance optimization of secure wireless networks
  • Advanced Windows Server administration and troubleshooting
  • Virtualization platforms (VMware and/or Hyper‑V)
  • Infrastructure performance analysis and root cause diagnostics

Operational Skills

  • Infrastructure change planning and risk assessment
  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and preventative remediation
  • Solution design documentation and implementation planning
  • Collaboration across engineering, operations, and security teams

Behavioral Skills

  • Strong ownership and accountability
  • Calm, precise decision‑making under pressure
  • Ability to lead without formal authority
  • Clear, confident technical communication

Qualifications

Required / Expected

  • 5–8 years of experience in network and infrastructure engineering
  • Strong hands‑on experience with server infrastructure and virtualization
  • Demonstrated ownership of complex implementations and major escalations
  • Experience in MSP or multi‑customer environments strongly preferred

Preferred Certifications

  • CCNA / CCNP or equivalent experience
  • Firewall certifications (Fortinet NSE4-8, SonicWall)
  • Microsoft Windows Server, Azure, or VMware certifications
