Network Segmentation information

What is network segmentation?

Network segmentation is the practice of dividing a computer network into smaller, isolated subnetworks to improve security and performance. By separating systems and data, organizations can limit the spread of cyber threats and control user access to sensitive information. This approach helps contain breaches, simplifies compliance, and enhances the efficiency of network management. Common techniques include using VLANs, firewalls, and access control lists to enforce boundaries between segments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a network segmentation role, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Network Segmentation role, you need a solid understanding of networking concepts, security best practices, and experience with firewalls and VLAN configuration, often supported by certifications like CCNA or CISSP. Familiarity with tools such as network monitoring systems, segmentation platforms, and security information and event management (SIEM) solutions is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with IT teams and identifying security gaps. These skills ensure that network environments are properly segmented to minimize security risks and maintain organizational compliance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in network segmentation roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in network segmentation roles often encounter challenges such as effectively balancing security with business operations, managing legacy systems, and ensuring seamless communication between segmented zones. Addressing these challenges typically involves working closely with IT and business units to understand critical workflows, implementing robust access controls and monitoring, and regularly updating segmentation policies to adapt to organizational changes. Staying current with industry best practices and leveraging automation tools can also help streamline the process and minimize human error.

What is the difference between Network Segmentation vs Network Security Engineer?

AspectNetwork SegmentationNetwork Security Engineer
Primary FocusDividing a network into segments to control trafficDesigning, implementing, and managing security measures
Required SkillsNetworking protocols, VLANs, firewallsFirewall configuration, intrusion detection, security policies
Work EnvironmentNetwork infrastructure, data centers, enterprise networksSecurity teams, IT departments, cybersecurity environments
CertificationsCCNA, CompTIA Network+CISSP, CEH, CompTIA Security+

Network segmentation involves dividing a network into smaller parts to improve performance and security, while a Network Security Engineer focuses on protecting the network through security measures. Both roles require networking knowledge, but their primary objectives differ: segmentation manages network structure, whereas security engineers safeguard it from threats.

What do you need for network segmentation?

A network segmentation specialist needs a clear understanding of network architecture, access controls, and security policies. They typically require knowledge of VLANs, firewalls, and network monitoring tools, along with relevant certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Security+. Proper planning and implementation skills are essential to effectively isolate network segments and enhance security.

Job description

We are seeking a Senior Network Engineer to design, deploy, and operate enterprise network infrastructure across on-premises environments and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure). This role bridges hands-on operational execution with emerging architectural responsibility and is expected to contribute meaningfully to automation and modernization initiatives while serving as a technical resource for junior engineers on the team.
Compensation:
Expected Annual Base Salary $130,000-$155,000 + bonus + profit sharing.
Responsibilities:
Network Operations & Engineering
  • Own day-to-day operations, monitoring, and troubleshooting of on-premises and cloud-connected network infrastructure across global offices and data centers.
  • Lead incident response for complex network issues, performing root cause analysis and driving resolution with minimal supervision.
  • Manage global carrier services and connectivity across EMEA, APAC, and the Americas.
  • Maintain and improve operational documentation, including network diagrams, runbooks, and change records.
  • Participate in an after-hours/on-call rotation for critical incidents.
Infrastructure Design & Deployment
  • Design and implement network solutions for LAN, WAN, wireless, and hybrid cloud connectivity, working within and contributing to established architectural standards.
  • Configure and deploy Aruba and/or Cisco infrastructure, including routing, switching, and wireless platforms.
  • Lead network hardware and software lifecycle management, including capacity planning, patching, and firmware upgrades.
  • Evaluate new technologies and provide recommendations to senior architects.
Cloud & Hybrid Connectivity
  • Implement and support hybrid connectivity between on-premises environments and AWS/Azure, including AWS Direct Connect, Azure ExpressRoute, and VPN configurations.
  • Apply cloud networking concepts (VPCs, VNets, routing, security groups) to support both operational and project-level needs.
  • Collaborate with cloud and systems teams to ensure consistent and secure network integration across environments.
Automation & IaC
  • Actively develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and Git for network provisioning and configuration management.
  • Write and maintain scripts (Python, Shell, or PowerShell) to automate repetitive tasks and improve operational efficiency.
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipeline development and support the team's broader IaC adoption goals.
  • Serve as a practitioner-level resource for automation tooling within the network team.
Firewall & Security
  • Administer Check Point firewalls, including rulebase management, policy optimization, and VPN configuration.
  • Manage Aruba ClearPass NAC policies for network access control, authentication, and segmentation.
  • Ensure adherence to our network security standards across all environments and assist in driving compliance across the broader infrastructure.
Mentorship & Collaboration
  • Provide technical guidance and day-to-day mentorship to Network Engineers on the team.
  • Participate in design and architecture discussions, contributing operational insight and engineering perspective.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with infrastructure, security, and cloud teams on shared initiatives.
Qualifications:
Required
  • Experience: Minimum of 6 years of enterprise networking experience in a hands-on engineering or operations role.
  • Networking Expertise:
    • Strong hands-on experience with Aruba and/or Cisco LAN, WAN, and wireless infrastructure.
    • Solid understanding of dynamic routing protocols (BGP, OSPF) and Layer 2 technologies (VLANs, STP, QoS).
    • Experience administering Check Point firewalls, including policy management and VPN troubleshooting.
    • Working knowledge of AWS and/or Azure networking (VPCs/VNets, routing, Direct Connect/ExpressRoute, VPN connectivity).
  • Automation & IaC:
    • Proficiency in at least one scripting language for network automation tasks.
  • Operations:
    • Experience leading incident response and root cause analysis for complex network issues.
    • Strong documentation skills and familiarity with ITIL-aligned change management processes.
Preferred
  • Experience with Aruba ClearPass NAC for access control and segmentation.
  • Prior experience with Terraform and Git in an enterprise environment; candidates without this experience at time of hire are expected to achieve working proficiency within 6-12 months.
