Network segmentation involves dividing a network into smaller parts to improve performance and security, while a Network Security Engineer focuses on protecting the network through security measures. Both roles require networking knowledge, but their primary objectives differ: segmentation manages network structure, whereas security engineers safeguard it from threats.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Network Segmentation role, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Network Segmentation role, you need a solid understanding of networking concepts, security best practices, and experience with firewalls and VLAN configuration, often supported by certifications like CCNA or CISSP. Familiarity with tools such as network monitoring systems, segmentation platforms, and security information and event management (SIEM) solutions is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with IT teams and identifying security gaps. These skills ensure that network environments are properly segmented to minimize security risks and maintain organizational compliance.

What is network segmentation?

Network segmentation is the practice of dividing a computer network into smaller, isolated subnetworks to improve security and performance. By separating systems and data, organizations can limit the spread of cyber threats and control user access to sensitive information. This approach helps contain breaches, simplifies compliance, and enhances the efficiency of network management. Common techniques include using VLANs, firewalls, and access control lists to enforce boundaries between segments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in network segmentation roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in network segmentation roles often encounter challenges such as effectively balancing security with business operations, managing legacy systems, and ensuring seamless communication between segmented zones. Addressing these challenges typically involves working closely with IT and business units to understand critical workflows, implementing robust access controls and monitoring, and regularly updating segmentation policies to adapt to organizational changes. Staying current with industry best practices and leveraging automation tools can also help streamline the process and minimize human error.

Job description

Description

Mechanical Dynamics & Analysis, LLC (MD&A), a world-class supplier of power generation maintenance services, repairs, and parts, is seeking a skilled IT/OT Network Engineer to support the Turbine & Generator Controls (TGC) Division in Fort Collins, Colorado.ย

This role supports the design, deployment, and secure operation of industrial and enterprise networks that connect MD&A's internal OT lab, office IT systems, cloud environments, and customer-site industrial networks.

This position is well suited for an engineer who enjoys hands-on network design, bridging IT and OT environments, and contributing to R&D and production deployments in highly regulated and critical infrastructure environments. Up to ~30% travel may be required.

Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: ย

  • Ownership of MD&A's internal OT lab network and associated cybersecurity controls
  • Design and deployment of Layer 2 and Layer 3 network architectures supporting:ย
    • Internal OT lab environments
    • Office IT infrastructure
    • Cloud platforms
    • Customer-site industrial networks
  • Serve as the technical bridge between IT and OT networks, ensuring proper segmentation, connectivity, and performance
  • Support secure collection and transport of customer operational data for remote monitoring and diagnostics
  • Patch management processes for OT network devices and cybersecurity infrastructure
  • Participate in OT cybersecurity initiatives including secure remote access, asset inventory, and network hardening
  • Develop and maintain network diagrams, standards, and configuration documentation
  • Review customer specifications and provide technical input for project scope, estimating, and execution
  • Clearly document and communicate technical design decisions to engineers, IT teams, and customers

Requirements

  • ย ย Working knowledge of industrial automation OT networks and cybersecurity protection schemes
  • Strong experience with Layer 2 networking (VLANs, trunking, switching)
  • Strong experience with Layer 3 networking (routing, subnets, gateways)
  • Experience configuring and supporting firewalls and network segmentation
  • Ability to collaborate across IT, OT, engineering, and vendor teams
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent experience ย

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting industrial or power generation facilities
  • Familiarity with TCP/IP, UDP, OPC, and Modbus protocols
  • Experience with:ย
    • Data historians (InfluxDB, OSI PI)
    • SCADA platforms (VTScada, Ignition)
    • Secure remote access tools (Xona)
    • Turbine control systems (GE, Emerson, Woodward, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley)
