Network Performance Monitoring information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Network Performance Monitoring, and why are they important?

To excel in Network Performance Monitoring, a solid grasp of networking fundamentals, troubleshooting, and data analysis—often backed by a degree in IT or related certifications like CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA—is essential. Familiarity with monitoring tools such as SolarWinds, Nagios, or Wireshark, as well as understanding SNMP and network protocols, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help professionals quickly identify and resolve network issues. These skills ensure network reliability, optimize performance, and minimize downtime, which are crucial for organizational productivity.

What are some common challenges faced in a Network Performance Monitoring role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Network Performance Monitoring often encounter challenges such as identifying the root cause of network slowdowns, managing large volumes of data from various network devices, and ensuring minimal downtime. Staying updated with evolving network technologies and integrating new monitoring tools can also be demanding. These challenges are typically addressed by leveraging automation, collaborating closely with IT and security teams, and continuously updating technical skills to adapt to new monitoring solutions.

What is network performance monitoring?

Network performance monitoring is the process of continuously measuring and analyzing the health, speed, and reliability of a computer network. It involves tracking various metrics such as bandwidth usage, latency, packet loss, and uptime to detect issues and optimize network performance. Effective network performance monitoring helps organizations quickly identify and resolve problems, ensuring smooth connectivity and minimizing downtime.

What is the difference between Network Performance Monitoring vs Network Security Analyst?

AspectNetwork Performance MonitoringNetwork Security Analyst
Primary FocusMonitoring network performance, uptime, and troubleshooting issuesIdentifying and mitigating security threats, analyzing security incidents
Required SkillsNetwork protocols, performance tools, troubleshootingSecurity protocols, threat detection, incident response
CertificationsCCNA, CompTIA Network+CompTIA Security+, CISSP
Work EnvironmentNetwork operations centers, IT departmentsSecurity operations centers, cybersecurity teams

While both roles involve network infrastructure, Network Performance Monitoring focuses on ensuring optimal network operation and troubleshooting performance issues. In contrast, Network Security Analysts concentrate on protecting networks from security threats and breaches. Both roles require technical skills and certifications but serve different aspects of network management.

Job description

As an Ethernet Network Engineer supporting avionics modifications, you will perform tasks across the full lifecycle-design, development, testing, fielding, and sustainment-of weapon systems. You will serve as a technical lead for high-performance Ethernet environments, ensuring that aircraft network architectures are scalable, compliant with airworthiness standards, and optimized for high-throughput data.

Onsite Work Location: Clearfield, Utah

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and monitor the health and status of Ethernet networks on aircraft systems
  • Support transition from current 10/100 TCP/IP network speeds to 1 GB/sec and future 10 GB/sec architectures
  • Identify and mitigate risks related to packet loss, latency, and network degradation at higher data rates
  • Apply expertise in IEEE 802.3 standards to ensure compliant and optimized network design
  • Design, test, and validate Ethernet network performance across multiple speed tiers (1G and 10G)
  • Utilize and enhance existing test tools for physical layer validation, packet loss detection, and collision analysis
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive Ethernet design and maintenance philosophy for airborne systems
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate robust, scalable, and high-performance network solutions
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network performance issues in complex, mission-critical environments
  • Provide recommendations for network architecture improvements, reliability, and long-term sustainment

Basic Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related technical field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience in systems engineering.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proven experience with high-speed Ethernet networking, including design, implementation, and troubleshooting in high-performance environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree: Master's Degree in Engineering.
  • Specialized Expertise: 8+ years of experience specifically with F-16 avionics systems.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Strong understanding of IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standards, including physical layer considerations and protocol behavior.
  • Local Candidates Preferred
