Network Performance Monitoring information

What are some common challenges faced in a network performance monitoring role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Network Performance Monitoring often encounter challenges such as identifying the root cause of network slowdowns, managing large volumes of data from various network devices, and ensuring minimal downtime. Staying updated with evolving network technologies and integrating new monitoring tools can also be demanding. These challenges are typically addressed by leveraging automation, collaborating closely with IT and security teams, and continuously updating technical skills to adapt to new monitoring solutions.

What is network performance monitoring?

Network performance monitoring is the process of continuously measuring and analyzing the health, speed, and reliability of a computer network. It involves tracking various metrics such as bandwidth usage, latency, packet loss, and uptime to detect issues and optimize network performance. Effective network performance monitoring helps organizations quickly identify and resolve problems, ensuring smooth connectivity and minimizing downtime.

What is the difference between Network Performance Monitoring vs Network Security Analyst?

AspectNetwork Performance MonitoringNetwork Security Analyst
Primary FocusMonitoring network performance, uptime, and troubleshooting issuesIdentifying and mitigating security threats, analyzing security incidents
Required SkillsNetwork protocols, performance tools, troubleshootingSecurity protocols, threat detection, incident response
CertificationsCCNA, CompTIA Network+CompTIA Security+, CISSP
Work EnvironmentNetwork operations centers, IT departmentsSecurity operations centers, cybersecurity teams

While both roles involve network infrastructure, Network Performance Monitoring focuses on ensuring optimal network operation and troubleshooting performance issues. In contrast, Network Security Analysts concentrate on protecting networks from security threats and breaches. Both roles require technical skills and certifications but serve different aspects of network management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in network performance monitoring?

To excel in Network Performance Monitoring, a solid grasp of networking fundamentals, troubleshooting, and data analysis—often backed by a degree in IT or related certifications like CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA—is essential. Familiarity with monitoring tools such as SolarWinds, Nagios, or Wireshark, as well as understanding SNMP and network protocols, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help professionals quickly identify and resolve network issues. These skills ensure network reliability, optimize performance, and minimize downtime, which are crucial for organizational productivity.

Job description

Position Overview

The Senior IT Consultant at Eminent Technical Solutions (ETS) is a highly skilled technical professional responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the network and systems infrastructure that our clients depend on. This role sits at the core of ETS's technical delivery, taking complex infrastructure challenges from concept through completion and ensuring that client environments are secure, stable, and built to scale.

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who thrives on solving hard problems independently. The Senior IT Consultant is expected to own projects from scoping through deployment, make sound architectural decisions without needing constant direction, and bring a proactive mindset to security, performance, and reliability.

While the primary focus is technical delivery, this role also requires strong client communication skills. You will work directly with clients to understand their environments, explain your recommendations clearly, and build the kind of trust that makes ETS a long-term partner rather than a vendor. You will also contribute to the broader team by mentoring junior technicians and producing documentation that supports the entire organization.

The Senior IT Consultant is a key part of how ETS delivers on its commitment to solving complex technology challenges the right way the first time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain secure and scalable network and systems infrastructure across client environments.
  • Configure and troubleshoot routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points to ensure reliable, high-performance connectivity.
  • Administer virtual environments and physical servers, including VMware and Hyper-V platforms.
  • Implement and monitor cybersecurity protections including firewalls, antivirus, endpoint management, and threat detection systems.
  • Manage disaster recovery operations and data backup systems, ensuring clients are prepared for failure scenarios.
  • Perform systems monitoring, diagnostics, and proactive maintenance to identify and resolve issues before they affect clients.
  • Lead client consultations to assess technical needs, present solutions, and guide environments through changes and upgrades.
  • Produce network documentation including system diagrams, deployment plans, and project update reports.
  • Mentor junior technicians and contribute to the technical development of the broader team.
  • Collaborate with the Help Desk Manager and support team on escalated issues that cross infrastructure boundaries.

Job Requirements

  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to pass a criminal background and MVR (driving record) screening
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening

Desired Skills

  • Network architecture, design, and infrastructure implementation
  • Firewall, router, switch, and access point configuration and troubleshooting
  • Windows Server administration and Active Directory management
  • Virtualization platform administration (VMware, Hyper-V)
  • Cybersecurity fundamentals and endpoint protection
  • Disaster recovery planning and backup systems management
  • Technical documentation and network diagramming
  • Client-facing communication and solution presentation
  • Independent problem-solving in high-pressure environments

Experience & Certifications

ETS values candidates with diverse backgrounds and hands-on technical experience. Applicants with some or all of the following experience are encouraged to apply.

  • Preferred Experience: 3 to 7 years of hands-on network and systems administration experience; experience in a managed services or technology consulting environment strongly preferred
  • Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Networking: Proficiency in configuring and troubleshooting routers, switches, firewalls, and access points across LAN/WAN environments
  • Microsoft Environments: Strong working knowledge of Windows Server, Active Directory, and Microsoft 365/Exchange
  • Virtualization: Hands-on experience with VMware or Hyper-V platforms
  • Security: Practical experience implementing and monitoring cybersecurity protections across client environments
  • Documentation: Ability to produce clear network diagrams, deployment plans, and technical support guides
  • Certifications: CompTIA Network+, Security+, or A+ valued; Microsoft MCP, MCSA, or MCSE valued; Cisco CCNA or equivalent a plus.
