Job description

The Procurement Manager is responsible for developing and executing sourcing strategies for rail transportation services across North America, while ensuring cost efficiency, service reliability, and long-term supplier performance. This role leads procurement initiatives, vendor negotiations, contract management, and performance monitoring for a critical transportation category that supports the company's inland logistics network.
         Responsibilities:
 

  • Develop and execute regional procurement strategies for intermodal rail services, aligning sourcing activities with operational goals, budget targets, and long-term business objectives.

  • Lead all strategic sourcing initiatives, including RFIs, RFQs, RFPs, contract negotiations, renewals, and supplier selection processes to secure competitive pricing, service quality, and capacity commitments.

  • Manage category financial performance, including budget development, forecasting, spend analysis, cost optimization initiatives, and reporting on transportation volumes, supplier incentives, and procurement savings

  • Analyze transportation, supplier, market, and operational data to identify trends, risks, cost efficiencies, and opportunities for network optimization and business growth.

  • Establish, monitor, and report on supplier performance metrics, KPIs, SLAs, and contractual obligations, ensuring providers consistently meet service, quality, and commercial expectations.

  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with rail carriers, intermodal providers, vessel-sharing partners, and other transportation stakeholders to support operational excellence and business continuity.

  • Lead supplier governance activities, including business reviews, performance evaluations, risk assessments, compliance audits, corrective action plans, and escalation management for service failures or disruptions.

  • Oversee procurement projects and assign category-specific initiatives to team members while ensuring effective execution, stakeholder alignment, and achievement of business objectives.


    Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Transportation, Business Administration, Maritime Studies, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, transportation, supply chain, or logistics, with preference for experience within rail, intermodal, maritime, container shipping, or transportation environments.

  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience managing professional-level employees, including coaching, performance management, talent development, and team building.

  • Proven success leading strategic sourcing initiatives, negotiating complex transportation contracts, and managing enterprise-level supplier relationships and transportation spend portfolios.

  • Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence decisions across multiple functions and organizational levels.

  • Proficiency with procurement systems, data analysis tools, and Microsoft Office applications; professional certifications such as CPSM, CSCP, APICS, or equivalent are preferred.
