How much do network hardware engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 20, 2026, the average yearly pay for network hardware engineer in the United States is $109,040.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $89,000.00 and $133,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a network hardware engineer do?

A Network Hardware Engineer is responsible for designing, installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting the physical components of computer networks. This includes working with routers, switches, firewalls, and other networking devices to ensure reliable and efficient data communication. They often collaborate with IT teams to upgrade network infrastructure and resolve hardware issues. Their role is crucial for organizations that rely on secure and robust network connectivity.

What are some common challenges faced by network hardware engineers when supporting large-scale enterprise networks?

Network Hardware Engineers working in large enterprise environments often encounter challenges such as managing hardware compatibility across multiple vendors, ensuring minimal downtime during hardware upgrades or replacements, and swiftly diagnosing hardware failures to maintain network reliability. They must also keep up with evolving technologies and security standards, requiring continuous learning and adaptation. Collaboration with IT support, network architects, and vendors is essential to address these challenges effectively and maintain optimal network performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network hardware engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Hardware Engineer, you need a solid background in computer networking, electronics, and hardware design, often supported by a degree in computer engineering or electrical engineering. Experience with network hardware components (routers, switches, firewalls), proficiency in diagnostic tools, and certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+ are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications enable engineers to design, troubleshoot, and maintain reliable network infrastructure, which is critical for organizational connectivity and performance.

What is the difference between Network Hardware Engineer vs Network Support Specialist?

AspectNetwork Hardware EngineerNetwork Support Specialist
CertificationsCCNA, CompTIA Network+CCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesigning, installing, and maintaining network hardwareTroubleshooting, supporting, and resolving network issues
Employer & Industry UsageTelecom, IT firms, large corporationsIT support companies, corporate IT departments

Network Hardware Engineers focus on designing and implementing network infrastructure, while Network Support Specialists handle day-to-day troubleshooting and support. Both roles often require similar certifications and work in related environments, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

Are network hardware engineers still in demand?

Network hardware engineers are still in demand due to ongoing needs for reliable and secure network infrastructure in organizations. They work with routers, switches, and firewalls, and often require certifications like Cisco CCNA or CCNP to stay competitive in the job market.

Do network hardware engineers work with hardware?

Yes, network hardware engineers work directly with physical networking equipment such as routers, switches, and firewalls. They design, install, troubleshoot, and maintain these hardware components to ensure network performance and security. Knowledge of hardware specifications and certifications like Cisco or CompTIA Network+ is often essential for the role.

Job description

Meta is seeking a Network Hardware Engineer to join the infrastructure team responsible for designing and scaling the physical network systems that power Meta's global data center fleet. In this role, you will drive the development of custom network hardware — including switching platforms, optical interconnects, and high-speed PCB assemblies — that underpin the reliability and performance of Meta's hyperscale infrastructure. You will work at the intersection of electrical engineering and network systems, translating complex network architecture requirements into production-ready hardware designs deployed at massive scale.
Network Hardware Engineer Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop custom rack-scale network hardware platforms, including switching ASICs, switch cards, and chassis systems for hyperscale data center deployments
  • Lead electrical design efforts for high-speed PCB layouts, signal integrity analysis, and power delivery networks for network switching and routing hardware
  • Define hardware architecture and component selection for custom network equipment, including liquid cooling, high-speed SerDes interfaces, optical modules, and management subsystems
  • Collaborate with ASIC, firmware, and network software teams to define hardware-software interfaces and ensure the functional integration of custom silicon into network platforms
  • Drive hardware bring-up, debug, and qualification of prototype network systems in lab environments using oscilloscopes, protocol analyzers, and network test equipment
  • Partner with contract manufacturers and ODMs to translate hardware designs into production-ready network equipment
  • Develop and execute hardware validation plans covering thermal, mechanical, power, and electrical compliance for network infrastructure equipment
  • Contribute to technical roadmaps for network hardware platforms, evaluating emerging technologies such as co-packaged optics and next-generation switching fabrics
  • Document hardware designs, test results, and failure analyses to support cross-functional engineering reviews and manufacturing readiness decisions

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 6+ years of experience in hardware or electrical engineering with a focus on network equipment, data center infrastructure, or high-speed digital systems
  • Experience designing and validating high-speed PCBs for networking applications, including signal integrity analysis for SerDes-based interfaces at 50G, 100G, or higher data rates
  • Experience with hardware bring-up and debug of complex network systems, including use of lab instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, TDRs, and network traffic generators
  • Experience collaborating with ASIC or silicon teams to integrate custom or merchant silicon into network hardware platforms
  • Experience working with ODMs or contract manufacturers through all the hardware development lifecycle stages, including EVT, DVT, and PVT

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in Linux or other embedded environments
  • Experience with networking hardware, including OSFP, or co-packaged optics module integration and characterization
  • Experience contributing to open networking hardware initiatives or custom silicon-based switching platform development
  • Experience with network hardware used in data center front-end, scale-out, or scale-up networks
  • Experience designing systems and boards using high-power ASICs (>500W)
