Network Firewall information

What is a network firewall?

Network firewalls are security devices or software designed to monitor and control incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules. They act as a barrier between a trusted internal network and untrusted external networks, such as the internet, to prevent unauthorized access and threats. Firewalls can be hardware-based, software-based, or a combination of both, and are essential components of modern cybersecurity strategies. They help protect sensitive data, maintain privacy, and ensure compliance with security policies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network firewall engineer?

To thrive as a Network Firewall Engineer, you need a strong understanding of network protocols, security principles, and firewall architecture, often supported by a degree in computer science or a relevant certification like Cisco CCNP Security or Palo Alto Networks certifications. Experience with firewall platforms (such as Cisco ASA, Palo Alto, or Fortinet), intrusion detection/prevention systems, and security information and event management (SIEM) tools is essential. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and clear communication are vital soft skills for diagnosing issues and collaborating with IT teams. These skills and qualities are critical to effectively safeguarding organizational networks and ensuring compliance with security policies.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals managing network firewalls, and how can they prepare for them?

Professionals managing network firewalls often encounter challenges such as keeping up with rapidly evolving security threats, ensuring firewall rules do not inadvertently block legitimate traffic, and maintaining compliance with organizational and regulatory standards. Staying current with security trends, regularly reviewing and updating firewall configurations, and collaborating closely with IT and security teams can help address these challenges. Proactive monitoring and ongoing training are also essential for effective firewall management and minimizing potential vulnerabilities.

What is the difference between Network Firewall vs Network Security Analyst?

AspectNetwork FirewallNetwork Security Analyst
Required CertificationsCompTIA Security+, Cisco CCNA, Cisco CCNPCompTIA Security+, CISSP, CEH
Work EnvironmentNetwork infrastructure, hardware and software configurationMonitoring, analyzing security threats, incident response
Employer & Industry UsageIT departments, cybersecurity firms, enterprisesIT security teams, cybersecurity consulting firms

Network Firewalls primarily focus on configuring and managing hardware or software devices that control incoming and outgoing network traffic based on security rules. Network Security Analysts analyze security data, monitor threats, and respond to incidents. While firewalls are a key tool used by analysts, their roles differ: firewalls are technical devices, whereas analysts interpret security data and develop strategies to protect networks.

How to become a network firewall expert?

To become a network firewall expert, gain a strong understanding of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP and routing, and learn to configure and manage firewalls such as Cisco ASA, Palo Alto, or Fortinet. Earning industry certifications like CompTIA Security+, Cisco CCNA Security, or Palo Alto Networks Certified Network Security Engineer (PCNSE) can validate your skills and improve job prospects.

Job Summary

Senior OT Network Engineer

PowerON Energy Solutions

Full-time

Hybrid | Toronto, ON, Canada

This posting is for a newly created position

Salary range $130,000 - 145,000

Reporting to the Head of Energy Markets & Software Solutions, you will be part of a team developing advanced OT and energy solutions for large business and institutional customers, including electric vehicle charging, battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar PV, microgrids, and distributed energy resources. Your work will directly support the design, deployment, cybersecurity, operation, and lifecycle management of mission-critical operational technology infrastructure that enables the transition to a clean energy economy.

The ideal candidate combines strong OT networking and cybersecurity expertise with practical field experience supporting industrial control systems, SCADA environments, and cloud-connected energy infrastructure. This individual will support projects across the full lifecycle — from architecture and requirements development through commissioning, operations, and ongoing support — while helping establish scalable, secure-by-design OT network standards across PowerON’s growing fleet electrification portfolio.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Design, Architecture & Systems Integration

• Design and develop secure, scalable, and highly available OT network architectures for electrification infrastructure projects including EV charging depots, BESS, DERs, and microgrids.

• Support development of end-to-end OT infrastructure designs including industrial networking, firewall segmentation, remote access architectures, SCADA communications, server infrastructure, virtualization, and cloud-connected OT solutions.

• Develop network architectures supporting secure integration between OT systems, cloud platforms, enterprise IT systems, and third-party vendor environments.

• Support implementation of resilient industrial network topologies including PRP, HSR, redundant ring architectures, and industrial failover strategies.

• Collaborate with systems integrators, software vendors, consultants, utilities, and engineers of record to ensure alignment between OT network architecture and overall project objectives.

• Support evaluation and selection of OT infrastructure technologies including firewalls, switches, cellular gateways, servers, VPN/remote access technologies, and industrial communications equipment.

Cybersecurity & Governance

• Review vendor and contractor design deliverables to ensure compliance with PowerON and client cybersecurity, networking, and operational requirements.

• Support secure-by-design implementation principles aligned with ISA/IEC 62443, NIST SP 800-82, and Zero Trust principles.

• Develop and maintain firewall policies, access control rules, network segmentation strategies, and data flow matrices.

• Support secure remote access solutions for employees, contractors, and vendors, including administration of VPN and privileged access management (PAM) solutions.

• Participate in cybersecurity risk assessments, technical reviews, and mitigation planning.

Project Delivery & Technical Oversight

• Support projects across the full lifecycle including requirements development, detailed design review, procurement support, FAT/SAT testing, commissioning, and operational turnover.

• Develop network and infrastructure requirements documentation issued to vendors, contractors, and engineering consultants.

• Ensure final deliverables align with approved requirements, standards, and operational expectations.

• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including SCADA, electrical, cybersecurity, and operations stakeholders.

• Support troubleshooting and technical resolution of OT network and communications issues during construction, commissioning, and operations.

Operations & Lifecycle Support

• Provide operational support for deployed OT infrastructure across active electrification sites.

• Support maintenance and lifecycle management of industrial firewalls, managed switches, OT servers, virtualization infrastructure, remote access platforms, and industrial communications devices.

• Maintain operational OT network documentation including IP address schemas, network topology diagrams, AD roles and permissions, firewall rule matrices, VLAN segmentation documentation, and remote access inventories.

• Support system uptime, reliability, and operational continuity through proactive monitoring, troubleshooting, and coordination with operations teams, contractors and vendors.

• Participate in on-site activities as required to support commissioning, troubleshooting, incident response, and operational support.
