Network Engineering information

What are some common challenges network engineers face when managing large-scale enterprise networks?

Network engineers in large-scale enterprise environments often encounter challenges such as maintaining network security across multiple sites, ensuring minimal downtime during upgrades or outages, and troubleshooting complex connectivity issues. Balancing the need for high performance with scalability and cost efficiency can also be demanding. Collaboration with cybersecurity, systems administration, and support teams is essential to address these challenges effectively and to keep the network resilient and efficient.

What is the difference between Network Engineering vs Network Administration?

AspectNetwork EngineeringNetwork Administration
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, Cisco Certified Network ProfessionalCCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesigning, planning, and implementing network solutionsManaging, maintaining, and troubleshooting existing networks
ResponsibilitiesBuilding new networks, optimizing performance, and scaling infrastructureMonitoring network health, configuring devices, and resolving issues

Network engineering focuses on designing and developing network systems, while network administration involves managing and maintaining those networks. Both roles require similar certifications and often work closely within the same industry, but their core functions differ in scope and focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Network Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking protocols, network design, troubleshooting, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with routers, switches, firewalls, and certifications like Cisco CCNA/CCNP or CompTIA Network+ are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help network engineers excel in diagnosing issues and collaborating across teams. These skills are critical to ensure reliable, secure, and efficient network operations within an organization.

What is network engineering?

Network engineering is a field of information technology focused on designing, implementing, managing, and maintaining computer networks. Network engineers ensure that data can move efficiently and securely between devices and locations, whether within a single office or across the globe. They work with hardware like routers, switches, and firewalls, as well as software to optimize performance and troubleshoot issues. Network engineers play a critical role in keeping organizations connected and their communications secure.

Job description

Who you are:

We are always looking for amazing talent who can contribute to our growth and deliver results! Geotab is seeking a Senior Network Engineer who will serve as the subject matter expert for all corporate, data center, and cloud-based networks - leading the design, implementation, and support of day-to-day network operations while driving innovation through AI-integrated infrastructure and intelligent automation. If you love solving complex networking challenges, building resilient global systems, and are keen to join an industry leader - we would love to hear from you!

What you'll do:

As a Senior Network Engineer, your key area of responsibility will be providing expert-level technical leadership for Geotab's corporate, data center, and cloud-based network environments - from architecture and design through to operations and continuous improvement. You will design and implement complex multi-site network solutions including firewalls, inter-site VPN, multi-WAN, and multi-VLAN environments, configure and troubleshoot Cisco and Dell Layer 2/3 switches, and maintain a fully redundant and resilient global network topology that meets demanding development, operations, and business requirements. You will leverage AI-powered observability, predictive analytics, and intelligent automation to proactively identify and resolve issues, drive compliance monitoring, and enable the team to move faster at scale.

To be successful in this role you will be a collaborative technical leader and mentor who can influence others, share knowledge across the team, and serve as a thought leader on emerging network and AI/ML technologies. In addition, the successful candidate will have strong analytical skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously in a fast-moving, flat organizational environment.

How you'll make an impact:
  • Lead the design, planning, and configuration of corporate, data center, and cloud-based network environments to support business growth and global operational resilience

  • Drive the integration of AI into network operations strategy - including automation, predictive monitoring, and intelligent infrastructure management - to achieve operational excellence at scale

  • Architect and recommend enterprise-grade AI-driven solutions that enhance network monitoring, analysis, and decision-making, and mentor team members on AI/ML adoption

  • Enable automation to reduce release cycle time and improve quality through AI-driven analytics, optimization dashboards with predictive thresholds, and automated recommendations

  • Incorporate security controls and AI-driven anomaly detection and threat analysis into system implementations to ensure robust enterprise security

  • Design and implement AI-driven data governance and compliance monitoring solutions, ensuring automated adherence to regulatory and organizational standards

  • Champion the adoption of generative AI tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot) across the team to accelerate troubleshooting, scripting, and documentation workflows

  • Mentor, guide, and influence team members - acting as a technology thought leader and cross-training resource for all network-related functions

What you'll bring to the role:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, Networking, or equivalent experience

  •  5-8 years of experience in Network Engineering with a strong background in enterprise and cloud-based environments

  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms including Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Microsoft Azure

  • Proficiency with scripting and automation tools (Linux Bash, PowerShell, DevOps tooling) and experience with AI/ML platforms such as Vertex AI or BigQuery ML

  • Deep expertise with enterprise network technologies including Cisco/Dell switching, firewalls, VPN, multi-VLAN, DNS/DNSSEC, SNMP, QoS, and wireless standards (802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax)

  • Proven experience with AIOps practices including incident detection, root cause analysis, and automated remediation across complex distributed systems

  • Certifications preferred: CCNA, CCNP, Professional Cloud Network Engineer, associate cloud certification (GCP or AWS), Google Cloud Generative AI, or Google Cloud Professional Machine Learning Engineer

If you got this far, we hope you're feeling excited about this role! Even if you don't feel you meet every single requirement, we still encourage you to apply.
